Rev. Symmes Henry was the pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1820 to 1856.
His daughter, Mary, married Jospeh Symmes, the man who would come to eventually proceed Symmes Henry as the pastor of First Presbyterian after Henry's death
Rev. Symmes Henry lived in the church manse, which, at the time, was referred to as the "parsonage planation." From the church's marriage records from 1744-1839, we know that Rev. Henry enslaved at least two individuals. The names on the marriage records are Betty and Charlotte. Currently, we do not know what happened to either woman after Rev. Symmes died suddenly without a will or where they might be buried.
While Rev. Henry died without a will, we do have a record of his estate. In this listing, we found the name "Gertrude Onque," seemingly the same Gertrude Onque who is Rev Harvey Onque's mother. Below her name is what appears to be "Work Girl." We're not exactly sure what this means, but we find it intriguing and suspicious.
