Sabina Higgins was born around 1786, and while her headstone may not be the oldest in the cemetery, she does have the earliest birthdays of all the women buried in Brainerd's colored section. Given that she was born before the 1804 gradual abolition of slavery law, it is possible that she was enslaved at one point. According to 1860 census records, she was listed as a "servant" living with the Buckelew family in their family mansion Lakeview. From the records, it is unclear as to whether or not she was enslaved by the Buckelew family.
Sabina Higgins passed in 1870 and is bured in the segregated section of Brainerd Cemetery.
