The PAUS Design Lab is located on the ground floor across from the gym. It is a wonderful space for students and teachers alike. This is a space unlike any other classroom in our building. It has the usual projection device at the front of the room, but is also outfitted with large, tall tables and three wall-mounted monitors. The monitors allow for one computer to be projected while a small group sits at the lower tables adjacent to the monitor. This setup promotes conversation and collaboration amongst group members. We often encourage students to take a turn operating the computer so that one person is not driving the navigation the entire time.
Additionally we have the amazing resource of a Epilog laser cutter. This machine can cut or engrave on a variety of materials. It is quite engaging for students to create a design and then laser cut it (with teacher direction, of course). Typically the initial laser cut product is different from the student's design expectation. Then we encourage students to make additional revisions called iterations to improve the results. Since the laser cutter does not take too long to 'print' the design, a student can see the results of their iterations in the same class period.
