6th: Students will be exploring the role of family in some hispanic cultures. They will learn the vocabulary on family as well as the verb to have. We will also be starting to learn to use regular verb conjugations.
7th: Students will be giving tours of a city they built as a team or independently with all places labeled in Spanish and highlighting the best parts. Then students will jump into a unit on food. We will explore the roots of Hispanic food and learn about African roots in the flavors of Latin America. If students earn it we may even have a live cooking lesson.
8th: Students will continue the unit on the house. We will explore different styles in the homes of latino America and Spain and they will begin to work on a real estate add for a home based on a client's specs.
March being the month of the Francophonie, all students will start this unit by learning and expanding their knowledge of what the Francophonie is and looks like.
6th: Students will learn how to describe the personality and clothing of francophone role models/important figures, using the verbs “to be” and “to have”. They will create and present their own "superhero" character using characteristics they will have learned about francophone role models. 7th: in continuation of planning a virtual travel and places to go to, students will learn and practice giving directions and using descriptive vocabulary to describe a place, its buildings and their location relative to each other.
8th: Students will learn and practice using descriptive vocabulary to describe aspects of the Francophone culture (places, people, fashion). They will work on a project of their choice.
6th: Students will learn the topic on family trees. They will be able to complete project on introducing their family numbers.
7th: Students will explore all types of clothes and colors.
8th: Students will explore Chinese food culture and study basic vocabulary and sentences in daily food.
Students will be able to analyze food labels in order to identify the most important information. Students will also reflect on the skills and knowledge acquired by completing their nutrition project.
Learning Goals: Fitness / Home Fitness.
Students will be able to:
articulate how daily exercise increases an individual's ability to get regular sleep;
self select exercise options that focus on specific muscles;
identify health benefits of having a strong core and posture to ensure lifelong health; identify the connection between exercise and academic performance;
identify the connection between exercise and chronic disease prevention;
complete the FITNESSGRAM physical fitness testing.
Students will be completing their Abstract Art unit. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate and work on a pin/button design(s) for a social issue that they will research or are passionate about. Students will also be writing their artist statement to accompany the design and discusss/share their deisgn and statements with thier peers.
6th graders will use their Soundtrap skills to start creating larger musical projects with a focus on storytelling. 7th and 8th graders will be finishing up their "Remix a Speech" projects. After remixing spoken word, they will begin remixing music and other forms of sound. All grades will continue working towards gaining a better command of digital audio workstations and music production skills.
Students are learning two pieces of music. Students will make a video recording using Screencastify Submit and/or other recording methods to attempt to create a virtual Band video.
Students in orchestra will be working on repertoire that they have selected from the Suzuki strings method books. We will be using smartmusic to listen, practice, and record our playing to generate feedback about our intonation and note accuracy. We will also be working on tuning our instruments accurately - this is essential as a developing player and especially because of the remote environment this year. We will also be reviewing our bow holds and ensuring the correct technique for the best tone production.
Students will build on their experience in playwriting by performing readers theater using existing scripts. We will begin to explore different ways to use our voice while acting such as breath support, volume, and projections. We will also begin experimenting with creating consistent character voices.
6th: Students will begin to explore famous Latino figures in order to continue building on their skills with the verb to be. They will also be practicing simple conversational Spanish so as to build their confidence starting basic conversations with someone in Spanish. 7th: Students will finalize their city plans in their groups and present these in some form in class. Students will also begin a unit on Hispanic food. We will be exploring the diverse roots of Hispanic food and how it reflects in current day to day living, as well as building an expansive vocabulary on how to navigate a store.
8th: Students will begin the unit on the house. We will be learning about different types of cultural households, and we will design real estate adds.
6th: Students will learn and practice the vocabulary related to the calendar (seasons, months, days, numbers and weather) in order to develop basic conversational skills, such as saying the date, talking about the weather and expressing likes and dislikes around seasonal activities. They will also explore topics related to the Francophonie.
7th: Students will continue working on questions words and using the verb "to go" to design a virtual trip to a Francophone place. They will also explore Francophone countries and cultural highlights to experience.
8th: Students will explore restaurant menus in different Francophone countries and will create and promote their own restaurant menus, individually or in small groups.
6th: Students will explore to read and write numbers in Chinese, and to learn the basic vocabulary on family numbers.
7th: Students will start to explore the topic of body parts and complete their project.
8th: Students will be able to describe the general jobs and careers in Chinese by vocabulary and sentences building.
Students will explore the connection between food and culture. They will also explore the connection between food choices and health. They will be able to create healthy snacks in their own home.

Students will be able to
identify personal reasons for being physically fit;
articulate the CDC’s recommendations for daily physical activity;
identify barriers and implement solutions to exercise;
express the connection between exercise and depression;
self select and explore different types of fitness.
Students will be focusing on contour drawings and abstract art this month. Students will begin with a mini lesson on blind contour and contour drawing, which will lead to contour art using various resources such as thread, yarn, and pen. Students will also use geometric shapes to create digital abstract art focusing on objective and non objective abstract work. Students will also be introduced to traditional and contemporary abstract art and artist.
All students will continue working on their command of digital audio workstations. 7th and 8th grade students recently completed a musical storytelling project -- how do we represent characters and moods through music? This will be expanded upon this month when students complete their "Remix a Speech" project, in which they will research a famous speech, decode the message and meaning behind the words, and figure out how to represent that through music. 6th grade just recently started their journey with Soundtrap, so they will continue learning the basics for most of February.
Students will be learning music to develop their music performance techniques to play with better pitch and rhyhm accuracy, tempo, and dynamics.

Students will continue their exploration of playwriting. They have been working on creating interesting and complex characters by writing monologues and now will be giving conflict to those characters. We will be exploring objectives, obstacles and tactics using creative writing, improv and scene work.
6th: Students will continued to learn expressions with the verb to be. Students will be learning about notable Afro-Latinos. Students will be creating their own super hero character based on the people they learned about. They will interact with each other over guided conversations online using various tools in order to promote using these independently.
7th: Students will continue to learn about traveling to different cultures, how to ask and give directions and the names of places in Spanish. They will use to go expressions to mimic conversations with peers, using various fun tools.
8th: Students will be learning about the rooms of the house. They will dive deep into what shelters look like in different Hispanic cultures and they will not only research real estate in Spanish-speaking countries but they will also design an affordable home based on a budget for a pretend client. Students will also be getting pretend roommates and will be designing a dorm room and describing it to the class.
6th: Students will continue learning how to express their likes and dislikes in the context of weather, seasons and seasonal activities. They will be invited to do virtual "show and tells" and they will design a like/dislike poster.
7th: Students will learn and practice using questions words and the verb to go in the context of a project "virtual travel to a francophone place" and will demonstrate their learning of actions words by describing activities that can be done in that place.
8th: Students will practice using food-related vocabulary (ingredients, utensils and cooking verbs) and demonstrate their learning by working on creating an original recipe or presenting a francophone dish.
All students will also explore and reflect on different aspects of French culture (foods and holidays/celebrations) and of the "Francophonie".
6th: Students will explore the topic of animals in Chinese, learn the basic vocabulary and practice speaking.
7th: Students will start to explore the topic of sports and prepare for their project.
8th: Students will be able to complete their project on the topic of career and education in Chinese.
Students will continue exploring growth mindset and goal setting. They will review key concepts and terms from the unit. They will also start exploring culture and cuisine.
Learning Goals: (3,4,5,6) Students will identify and practice healthy strategies to deal with stress. Students will participate in at least 25 minutes of self-selected physical activity that is aimed at relieving stress. Students will identify how they feel after exercising.
Students will work on creating their artifact for this module to add to their IHP (Individualized Health Portfolio).
Students will be working on portraiture drawings. They will begin with a step by step demo on facial structure and placement. Then they will have studio time to observe and complete either a portrait or self portrait drawing or illustration. Students will begin to observe and render a realistic drawing with multiple values, shading, and no hard outlines or a complete colored illustration of a person.
Students will begin working on larger digital music making projects. Additionally, 6th graders will also be doing some projects regarding pop culture/music history. 7th and 8th graders will be continuing with Soundtrap, and now that many of the classes have learned all the basics of the program and have been able to get experience making music with loop based tracks, they will begin working on their first larger scale remixing project when we return from winter break.
Students are learning major scales and a piece of music. Students are also using Screencastify submit to make video recordings as one way to show show demonstration of learning.
Students in orchestra will be selecting repertoire that will help develop their musicianship and technique on their instruments. We will be using Smartmusic to listen, practice, and record our playing to generate feedback about our intonation and note accuracy. We will also be working on tuning our instruments accurately - this is essential as a developing player and especially because of the remote environment this year.
Students will continue their exploration of playwriting. They will be able to express themselves through creative writing prompts. Using existing scenes and writing new ones they will work on showing the story instead of telling the story through their dialogue. Using character creation exercises students will build rich and dynamic original characters that they will write monologues for and perform for their class.
6th: Students are practicing basic conversations about their likes and dislikes. Students will learn expressions with the verb to be, in order to learn about and describe important Hispanic characters in history.
7th: Students will demonstrate their skills using "to go" expressions to talk about where they are going. They will learn how to give and ask for directions when traveling to a Spanish-Speaking country and they will begin to design a city plan.
8th: Students will learn about the rooms of the house, how to describe them, as well as the use of stem-change verbs and how to use them in realistic conversations. Students will begin to design a real estate ad and study the various types of homes you can see when traveling to Spanish-speaking countries.
6th: Students will learn basic vocabulary related to calendar, weather, seasons and learn how to express likes and dislikes.
7th: students will learn and use vocabulary in context: question words and actions words (movement, routines and travel) to work on small projects
8th: students will review and expand their vocabulary repertoire related to activities/hobbies and action words/commands (culture-related project).
All students will also explore and reflect on different aspects of French culture (foods and holidays/celebrations) and of the "Francophonie".
6th: Students will learn Chinese strokes and how to write Chinese characters. They will also explore Chinese names.
7th: Students will explore the topics of family members and holidays in Chinese. They will create a family tree project.
8th: Students will explore the topics of careers and education in Chinese.
Students will be able to describe the concept of mindset and analyze factors that contribute to either a fixed or growth mindset. Students will also be able to set SMART goals.
Learning Goals: (3,4,5,6) Students will identify and practice healthy strategies to deal with stress. Students will participate in at least 25 minutes of self-selected physical activity that is aimed at relieving stress. Students will identify how they feel after exercising. Students will create a daily/weekly routine that encompasses the following:
- A bedtime and wake up time that allows for consistency of at least 8 hours of sleep.
- A minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity per day.
- Planned out weekly classes and responsibilities (classes, Homework, etc.)
- A minimum of one activity that is selfcare.
- Set times for eating meals.
Students will work on creating their artifact for this module to add to their IHP (Individualized Health Portfolio)
Students are heading into the Drawing Unit. Students will begin with a step by step rendering of a realistic sphere using values, highlights, cast shadows, and so forth. Students will then use the skills and techniques shown to render 3D cones and cylinders.
In the second part of the unit, students will draw from observations. Students will set up a still life to draw and then begin a portrait drawing which will lead in to next month.
All students will be continuing to explore their creative side through digital music composition and exploration.
6th graders will continue reviewing and developing basic musicianship, primarily focusing on rhythms, and will continue actively making music using online software.
7th and 8th graders will continue learning music production skills in our online Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) of choice, SoundTrap. They will begin working on larger projects and working with more detailed mixing skills, such as automation.
Students will be learning the notes and instrumental technique for various major scales or drum rudiments depending on their instrument.
Students in orchestra will be selecting repertoire that will help develop their musicianship and technique on their instruments. We will be covering the scales, arpeggios and bowing techniques associated with their chosen selections. We will also be working on tuning our instruments accurately - this is essential as a developing player and especially because of the remote environment this year.
Students will be exploring the exciting world of acting. Using acting exercises students will be using the body, face and voice to express emotion and character. Students will practice using facial expression to show emotion. They will then explore articulation, enunciation and ways to change their voice for different characters. Finally they will explore body language and gesture.
6th- Students are learning to have basic conversations about their likes and dislikes. Students will practice by creating their own poster about what they like and dislike. They are also exploring and reflecting on different aspects of hispanic culture. 7th - Students are learning how to use to go expressions to talk about where they are going. Students are practicing and demonstrating their learning by designing a slide presentation of their virtual trip to a Hispanic culture. They are also exploring and reflecting on different aspects of hispanic culture. 8th - Students are learning about how to navigate through a restaurant in Spanish by creating their own PAUSTAURANTE concept in groups or individually, as well as short commercials or posters to promote it. They are also exploring and reflecting on different aspects of hispanic culture
6th: Students will learn basic conversational skills and basic vocabulary related to calendar, weather, numbers, alphabet.
7th: Students will reinforce basic vocabulary around different themes (numbers, commands, questions words, etc...).
8th: Students will review and expand on vocabulary linked to question words and commands / actions words.
6th: Students will learn Pinyin, pronunciation rules and greetings in Chinese.
7th: Students will learn vocabulary on for the seasons and weather, weekdays, and birthdays.
8th: Students will review vocabulary for sports and do projects based on their favorite sports.
Students will explore routines and healthy habits. They will practice coping strategies to deal with stress and research the benefits of getting a good night’s sleep.
Learning Goals: Students will be able to identify personal stressors, potential harmful effects, and healthy coping mechanisms. They will analyze long term consequences of stress and poor coping behaviors.
Students are finishing up their photography assignment and will be moving on to the Illustration Unit this month. Students will start off with foundation work such as line weight, shading, and values. Students will practice creating characters and backgrounds drawings, which will ultimately turn into refined inked illustrations.
6th Grade will be reviewing basic musicianship skills and continuing their work with music technology and online music making.
7th Grade will be introduced to SoundTrap, a DAW (Digital Audio Workspace) that will allow them to create, remix, and produce their own music. We will be working on mastering the basics.
8th Grade will review SoundTrap skills they were introduced to last spring and begin working on projects using this DAW.
The Band Intensive will begin on November 23 and the students will be receiving their musical instruments and start a music performance fundamentals unit.
When the orchestra intensive begins on November 23rd, students will become reacquainted with their instruments and begin their group lessons. 7th and 8th grade students will review some techniques from last year and begin making individual repertoire choices. 6th grade students will review basic techniques and begin working on sight reading techniques.
The Acting & Playwriting intensive will begin on November 23rd. Students will work on building their acting and playwriting skills. Using your voice, body and face to create fun characters, we will play and perform stories together.
