Independent Activity Schedules

Independent Activity Schedules are something we work on at school to promote independence through multiple tasks. They are flexible, built on skills students already have mastered and promote fluency with various skills.

Some suggestions include......

-Mastered academic work (if you need specific work for your student in this area, please email me)

-A specified time on an academic website such as https://play.smartyants.com/login (maybe ten minutes)

- An art or creative experience. (drawing, coloring, painting, playing with play-doh, even legos or blocks).

- An activity of daily living or Functional Life Skill. (Cleaning tables, sweeping, washing dishes, loading/unloading dishwasher, laundry;sorting, folding, washing, drying).

-Physical activity (exercise, dancing).

- Read a favorite book or story

- A puzzle that is not too difficult and is enjoyable

How it works: Allow for your child to select the order of activities and write out a schedule based on selected activities. Simply after that your child (with as much assistance as necessary) completes each activity and checks, or crosses it off the list. Each activity should be cleaned up after conclusion and before moving on to the next activity.

Its important that this effort be rewarded. So before starting the schedule discuss what your child might do at the end of the list. (time on the ipad/computer a preferred item or activity. This can be written at the bottom of the schedule.

Feel free to start small and slow. Maybe two or three activities on the list that your child is familiar comfortable with, and then add on from there.

As always please contact me for any clarification or suggestions.
