Mission & Vision

Mission

Our mission is to intentionally foster institutional diversity, equity and inclusion in every action and branch of our school in order to provide an environment of excellence in which each student, teacher, staff and community member is able to nurture self- and group identities while cultivating empathy and respect for differences; promote critical thinking skills about bias; and foster courage to stand up against discrimination.

"Where hate flourishes, all are corrupted. Where injustice reins, all are unequal."

- Whitney M. Young

Vision

This group champions diversity, equity, and inclusion for key stakeholders: students, families, teachers, staff, administration, and community members by supporting anti-bias education, professional development, equity in hiring, and involvement of parents and community.

To become the inclusive community we aspire to be, we must treat each other equitably and with respect, creating an environment where no voices are silenced and all of us can thrive. Our definition of diversity encompasses structural and social differences that form the basis of inequality in our society, including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, country of origin, citizenship status, socioeconomic class, ability, religion, gender and sexuality. Our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity has the potential to optimize contemporary inclusive practices as well as disrupt and transform unprincipled thoughts and actions.

The Committee seeks to support the following strategic objectives:

  • Improve the inclusion of all people at all levels of the institution. Specifically, address how differences in power and possibilities align with social categories and identities, and how these differences distinguish individuals and groups in ways that privilege some and constrain others.

  • Create an environment that fosters awareness and inclusive practices by supporting anti-bias education, professional development, equity in hiring, and involvement of parents and community.

  • Hold leadership accountable for diversity, equity and inclusion goals and objectives.

  • Engage various external stakeholder groups that support Whitney Young High School’s community values, and ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, actions, and results are transparent to all key stakeholders.
