"An IB education aims to transform students and schools as they learn, through dynamic cycles of inquiry, action and reflection. Teachers enable and support students as they develop the approaches to learning they need--for both academic and personal success."

The following information are subject guide briefs for each of the MYP classes. Parents and students can see in a snapshot what is course description, overview, and assessment criteria. Please disregard the eAssessment information, as Schurz MYP students do not take the eAssessment.
Language and Literature (English)
Freshmen and Sophomores are scheduled for survey literature.
Language Acquisition (Spanish)
Students may take Italian, but the IB does not offer Italian in the DP, so students who are interested in continuing into the DP will be scheduled for Spanish or French. Currently, Schurz offers only Spanish in the DP, but we are capable of offering French based on student interest.
Individuals and Societies (History)
Freshmen are scheduled for World History and Sophomores are scheduled for U.S. History which is aligned with the AP allowing students to take the AP exam in their sophomore year!
Sciences
Freshmen are scheduled for Biology and sophomores take Chemistry. Both sciences are aligned with the new DP Biology being offered 2021-22.
Mathematics
Students are placed in either Algebra or Geometry depending on what math class they took their 8th grade year. If they took Algebra in the 8th grade then they will be signed up for Geometry in the 9th grade and Algebra/Trigonometry in the 10th grade. Students who have not taken Algebra in the 8th grade will take it in the 9th grade and then take Geometry in the 10th grade.
Visual and Performing Arts
At Schurz, all freshmen are enrolled in a performing arts (chorus, band, orchestra) and in their sophomore year, they may choose to continue in music OR take visual arts.
Physical and Health Education
Students may choose to take PHE or JROTC. If they choose PHE, they will have 1/2 of a year in PE and 1/2 of a year in Health in the 9th grade. In the 10th grade they will have 3/4 of the year in PE and 1/4 of the year in Driver's Education.
Unique to IB, interdisciplinary learning encourages teachers in different disciplines or subjects to work together to teach their discipline in conjunction with another discipline. The result of that learning is often a project-based summative assessment that requires students to take what they have learned in each subject/discipline and synthesize that learning in unique and authentic ways.
Unique to the IB and 10th grade year, this project will meet the service learning requirements and encompass all students. It will be introduced in the last quarter of the 9th grade year and will be completed by Winter Break of their 10th grade year.

All MYP students are assessed formally using rubrics based on MYP objectives (what we would call standards). The MYP objectives can easily encompass any state or national standards and real collaboration existed between IB and the Common Core to make sure that alignment would be fruitful. The MYP is a continuum, which means that they have objectives for the various years of learning. You will see below Year 1, Year 3, and Year 5 of the MYP framework for each subject group.
Year 1 correlates to 6th grade; Year 3 correlates to 8th grade, and Year 5 correlates to 10th grade. You will notice the 7th grade and 9th grade do not have objectives specified by year. That is because it is assumed that 7th grade students will move between Year 1 and Year 3, as 9th grade will move between Year 3 and Year 5. At Schurz, students in the 9th grade will begin the year (semester 1) using Year 3 objectives and will transition to Year 5 objectives in the second semester.
The curriculum for each subject is reviewed and updated regularly (at least every 5 years). Teachers, consultants, IB staff, and Examiners/Moderators all participate in the curriculum development and review.
Summative and formative assessments are the ways in which student learning is assessed.
What is the difference between formative and summative assessments?
Formative assessment tasks are all the work that happens in the class that leads to the summative assessment task. They often are not graded. Research supports that students are given feedback when they are learning skills necessary to score well on the summative assessment. Research states that grading students on the learning process is not conducive to building self-esteem and can actually inhibit risk-taking which is a key component to learning. When formative assessments are scored, they are given a number score to help guide students as to where they are in their understanding of the skills needed to succeed on the summative assessment. These scores are represented on the scale of 0-4.
Summative assessment tasks are scored because they are the culminating tasks that give students the opportunity to show learning in each of the 4 objectives for each subject group. On these summative assessments, students receive a score on rubrics that are internationally aligned and teacher-clarified to meet the specific needs of the task. These scores are represented on a scale of 0-8. Because CPS requires students to receive a letter grade, these 0-8 numeric scores are translated into letter grades and percentages. However, individual subject scores (0-8) for each of the 4 objectives are based on a "best fit" model and are not averaged.
How will these scores be shared with students and parents?
Each semester, students will receive an overall MYP score of 1-7 which is based on a sum of their overall scores in each of the 4 objectives for each subject group. This score of 1-7 correlates to universal descriptions of the students overall work in the class, including formative assessments.
MYP students will receive a separate MYP report with the CPS report card. The MYP report will state where the student is in each of the 4 objectives per subject as represented on a scale of 0-8 and an overall MYP score for each subject based on the 1-7 scale with descriptors. Again, these scores are not averaged.
The CPS report card will give the letter grade the student has received in the class which is averaged.
