Classrooms do not look, feel, or sound like a traditional classroom where students are in rows facing the teacher, and emphasis is placed on obedience and quiet. Students take an active role in their learning (building their agency) and teachers take the role of a facilitator of that learning.
The learning is holistic. While content is important, how much a student knows is never as important as how well a student understands. A growth mindset is required when assessing student work.
International mindedness is fully developed in the classrooms where students are exposed to a variety of perspectives and cultures widening their awareness and preparing them to take up the mantle of global citizenry.
Schurz is moving to an MYP for ALL next year in the 9th grade. This means that all 9th grade students will get the MYP framework in all classes that are not already part of a different program of study (CTE, AVID). All 9th grade teachers have been trained in the MYP in the SY 2020-21 and have undergone in-house professional development to prepare for the implementation of this program. To better understand WHY Schurz has decided to move MYP for ALL, please watch the testimonials below, as well as, read what the research has to say about the MYP. Click the button below to read more.

In this Research Snapshot, you will find comparisons between MYP and non-MYP students. You will find that MYP students have higher GPAs, PSAT and SAT scores, and record more service learning hours than non-MYP students.
In the Research Summary, you will find comparisons of MYP and non-MYP students' participation and performance in high school. In this study you will find that when compared to similar non-MYP students, MYP students were 34% more likely to enroll in a rigorous program of study in their 11th and 12th grade years and were 39% more likely to score a credit obtaining score on AP or DP exams.
What does this mean? Students who have had the MYP framework have built up the confidence and the practice to not only challenge themselves with rigorous coursework, but also succeed in that rigorous coursework at a rate that is 1/3 more successful that those who have not had and MYP framework in their school. Not only do MYP students believe in themselves, pushing themselves to go further than they might have originally thought they were capable of, but they also produce "college ready" work according to national standards.

How do I apply to the MYP program at Schurz High School?
There are two options:
Option A: Schurz High School maintains an egalitarian MYP pre-Diploma Program. Students are admitted to this program using a set of criteria through a centralized application process that is monitored by Chicago Public Schools.
Application criteria:
Suggested minimum 7th grade GPA of 3.0
Attend a mandatory IB information session (this has been waived for this SY 2020-21)
We choose students based on RANK in GoCPS.
Please remember that GoCPS is how your apply to the IB pre-DP program at Schurz. You must rank us high on GoCPS, so that you will receive an invitation.
Option B: Schurz High School maintains that equity to all programs of study is of our highest priority. For this reason, Schurz is offering MYP for All for incoming freshmen. Students who have chosen a program of study, such as Engineering, will take their classes assigned to that program of study. For all classes not assigned to that program of study, students will receive the MYP framework.
All students will get the MYP framework and will have access to choosing the Diploma Program, if they desire.
All 9th grade and 10th grade teachers will be trained in the MYP framework and will provide the MYP to all 9th and 10th grade students.
