Physical Education, Health & Wellness, and Driver Education are courses designed to provide students opportunities to examine and increase their basic knowledge of healthy living. The main objective for each student is to take responsibility for their own health and well-being for a lifetime.
What will we learn this year in Physical Education I and Health Education?
We will participate in many different tradition and non-traditional sports. In Physical Education I, the class will engage in a variety of sports and fitness based physical activities designed to promote and develop lifelong health and skill related wellness. Students may learn about and engage in many physical forms including but not limited to; team sports, individualized-dual sports, team building, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, and specialized fitness components related to wellness. Wellness classes all incorporate the development and maintenance of physical fitness by using fitness as the activity. The different sports will promote active lifestyles, challenges thinking in a fun environment, and develop movement competencies in a variety of physical activities. All students will learn to develop teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal skills by exploring decision-making and risk taking. The sports in PE I and PE II that will be incorporated this school year will include but are not limited to: fitness, team building, softball, soccer, basketball, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, floor hockey, swimming (not physically), and much more!
During freshmen year, one semester is dedicated to Health Education. In this time the course will align to raise students knowledge and skills that can help make mental/emotional intelligent choices, learn the importance to physical health, and identifying social health for analyzing influences of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors. Students will be able to understand research literacy, manage and learn coping mechanisms, and recognize illnesses and disorders on how to manage and enhance skills to health and avoid or reduce health risks. Some units that will be taught are health and wellness, body systems, nutrition, stress management, sexual education, and drug education.
What topics will we cover this year in Physical Education II and Driver Education?
During PE & Wellness classes, all students will learn the following subjects: health & wellness, nutrition, mental health, body systems, heart rates, fitness planning, body composition, muscular endurance, muscular strength, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, setting goals, swimming safety (PE II Only), and much more!
In PE II, one quarter of the school year will be dedicated to Driver Education. All students are required to receive 30 hours of classroom instruction in order to move on to receiving his/her/their permit and Behind-the-wheel instruction at a Range Facility. WPCP does not offer Range. WPCP DOES NOT ISSUE DRIVING PERMITS. Students will receive their permit after they have successfully enrolled for Range. The Range facility will administer the permit on their first day of behind-the-wheel instruction.
We all have been significantly impacted by COVID-19. As teachers, we are adjusting how we socialize, learn, and teach. As of right now, WPCP and CPS encourage students to wear masks when necessary.
The Center of Disease Control recommends children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years partake in 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily (CDC, 2020). As your teacher, my teaching philosophy is to educate students using Illinois State Standards (ISBE), the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Standards and implement a higher level connection with rigorous programming to create an age appropriate curriculum designed to encourage life long physical activity and learning.
