Physical therapy services promote CPS students’ gross motor development. Our school-based physical therapists perform a variety of therapeutic interventions focusing on functional mobility and safe, efficient access to and participation in activities and routines in students’ natural learning environments.
Gross motor skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as standing and walking, running and jumping, and sitting upright at the table. They also includes eye-hand coordination skills such as ball skills (throwing, catching, kicking) as well as skipping, doing jumping jacks, galloping, and participating in Physical Education.
Functional Mobility can look different for each child! This is how your child moves around their environment, this can be rolling, crawling, walking, using a walker or assistive device, or using a wheelchair.
Balance, strength, coordination, and endurance are the building blocks that kids need to have in order to be able to participate in gross motor skills and functional mobility skills throughout the school and home environments.
