Curatorial Rationale
I am an artist because I desire to express myself and leave a lasting mark on the world through my artwork. Since I started making art, my one driving factor has been to impress and remind many people about their lives and their actions such as their past, their regrets and doubts. In The Dark Side of Life, I commence the story by displaying the ugly side of life, which is death. There are people in the world who have escaped death’s clutches and seen the light of the day after being dead. Red interlocks each human being through blood and death stops the body from producing more blood, the lifeforce of an individual without which everyone on the planet would be dead and alone.
Death Incarnate demonstrates the impossibility of escaping death, everything in the world lives, and so everything in the world dies. Everyone who was alive once walked the path into the void and one day everyone in the world will also follow this path which leads to misery and sorrow. Waking Dead illustrates the macabre instances in which the dead come back. It is in these dark moments where isolation and despair rule over the living and drive mad the dead. War tells the story of the destruction that once besieged the world through the omens of the Apocalypse. Through great fires and sieges leaving many dead, and others dying of disease, and overall chaos. Death is Rebirth shines a light on the hidden truth of the world. Such as reincarnation (the act of being born again), also known as rebirth. Through which the mind insinuates that to reincarnate, one must first lose everything. Family, friends, and life itself are lost to live once more. The audience can relate to war, death, sickness and conquest along with misery, sorrow and desperation.
Conquest illuminates the struggle to continue with life after all has faded. Every physical possession is shattered, while memories fade away and leave only a black space where once there was vivacity, through the blend of colors into a dull green grey. The mind breaks and distorts reality, creating illusions that one desires to be true. Light at the Gateway seeks attention through its usage of shades and symbolism through broken imagery. By warping a pure symbol of life and happiness, death’s gateway unleashed. One which lures the mind to the blocked-off tunnel by vines which block out the hidden things in one’s soul. Markings concludes the story by dissolving the barrier between the two worlds in an explosion of colors. The blunt usage of the occult and mystical forms a connection to the one entity feared by all, Death. The only entity that separates family and breaks bonds forged through passion. The Dark Side of Life, Death Incarnate, Waking Dead, War, Death is Rebirth, Conquest, Light at the Gateway, and Markings use the symbolism of the color red to interlock and drive the point that death is the end.
The Dark Side of Life is in the middle of the wall drawing the audience's attention, with Death Incarnate to the left of the artwork captivates wandering eyes and draws in the lonely. Waking Dead is to the right of The Dark Side of Life in order to invoke the primal fear of death with Conquest above and to the right to form a fragile link to the artpiece through its connection to the fear of death. Above The Dark Side of Life is Death is Rebirth to draw attention to the intense usage of the shades of yellow and blue. Light at the Gateway is below The Dark Side of Life to instill fear into the audience to connect with the more sinister emotions such as misery, sorrow, anger, desperation and defeat. Markings is opposite of Conquest by being below Death Incarnate and to the left to form a parallelogram to showcase power and undeniability as to the ultimate judge and executioner. War is to the right of Light at the Gateway and to the left as one of the points of a diamond to further increase the suspense and draw in the audience through its intricate connection to every person’s past and knowledge.

Life is a beautiful thing that should be protected. We take for granted that which our loved ones gave to us. There are times though when life hides a secret and ugly figure, Death. When Death comes knocking we fear it and at times feel it is the scariest thing in life. Zombies represent that ugly side of life when even death cares not for its next victim and casts it out, like an unwanted memory or item. While life embraces all of its creations without care for its appearance.

The entity of Death is both powerful as it cuts the string of life holding a person to our world. Through which Life itself loses a part of itself as it misses a portion of both power and creation. Death and Life can coexist in a being that is essentially what a zombie represents. However, death is a twisted entity and will always reclaim what belongs to it. The winding path encircling the figure is a guide back to the depths of darkness, back to death.

The dead should stay in their afterlife whether it be bad or good. When the dead walk or live again, death has permeated their flesh and corrupted their consciousness. Death is the end for there is no way to come back after passing on into the next world. Death is seen in the rising figures from the mausoleum and the freshly buried casket. The hand seen showcases the dark forces at work in bringing up the dead.

War, a massive amount of death produced through fighting between people. The most bloodthirsty of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. A never ending world of fire showcases the destruction, while the other Horsemen showcase their own power through death, sickness and conquest of a town. Death, through a world filled with decay and death. Sickness, killing people until only one is left to suffer and die alone. Conquest, through a bloody town ravaged and left abandoned.

Death is seen as the darkest time in the cycle of the human race. It is when the life of creatures is at an end and will never return which is symbolized by the black surrounding and chaining the representation to its fate, death. The flowers in the painting represent how everything around them is used to give new life to what was once alive. Rebirth, into a new being who will be used to give life back to what has been reaped by Death’s power.

War leads to the subjugation of all living things, including human beings. Following the trails of destruction is Conquest. An entity and a thing, the total takeover of things once belonging to another. Many in the distant past experienced this after their home was subjected to war. War is a powerful tool and is used as a pawn to fulfill the desires of a higher power. Through conquest everything is taken and changed. Losing its vibrancy and variety until all is bleak and a single color.

The entrance to the afterlife is viewed in many different ways. People believe there is a gate one must cross which will direct the person to their paradise or tormentation for their wicked deeds. The strokes of black paint fading into white symbolize the entrance of the gateway. While the white paint gives the illusion of paradise waiting at the other side of the gateway. The light of paradise insinuates that the viewer has done good things in life which have let him/her earn paradise.

As the narrative comes to a close the figure in red has finally come to her end. Finishing her task to embody all that is lost. Dark red for the loss of passion and lifeforce. The broken mirror, the shard of glass stained in blood and the strokes of red, black, dark red, blue and purple breathe into the center and create chaos. Each color holds value through the emotion it embodies and imparts to the audience such as loss, sorrow and acceptance.
