Hello 8th Grade Families,
Graduation Tickets: All students received 6 graduation tickets. Please check their backpacks!
California Students: All travelers received a yellow envelope with information and materials they need to bring with them. Please check their backpacks! Review critical trip information and please arrive at Orozco no later than 6am.
Caps and Gowns: Students will receive their caps and gowns on Monday, June 1st. Please take great care when ironing them. Students are allowed to decorate their caps; tassels and ribbons will be distributed on graduation day.
Banquet: On Monday, June 1st, students must arrive at school by 8am already dressed for the occasion.
Graduation Practice: We have two of our three graduation practices scheduled for Tuesday, June 2nd. Please make sure your student is at school this day!
Graduation Ceremony: The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3rd, from 9:00-10:00am. Students must arrive by 8:30am. Please review the important details below to help ensure a smooth and memorable celebration for everyone:
Tickets: Each student has already received 6 tickets. Please ensure you bring them with you, as tickets are required for entry.
Seating: Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Balloons: For visibility and safety, balloons are not allowed in the audience seating area.
Gown Accessories: If you have purchased any special accessories for your child to wear over their gown, we kindly ask that you wait until after the ceremony to give them to your graduate. We need to be able to clearly distinguish students who are receiving school-issued awards and special recognition medals during the ceremony.
Field Day: Students are expected to be in school on Thursday, June 4th. We will have fun activities planned for field day and students will receive their Q4 report cards and diplomas.
Fundraising Update: In an effort to maintain transparency regarding our fundraising, we have created this sheet to document all income, expenses, and profits.
High School Projections: The transition to High School includes confirming your home address in ASPEN. Please email Ms. Cain to confirm your home address that is listed in ASPEN.
High School Connection: This is an opportunity to support 9th graders in their transition to High School. See more information here. Please fill out the High School Connection Interest form and indicate whether or not your child will participate. If your child will not participate please select “No” on the form so we can keep track.

Sacramento Trip: May 26th-29th

Students not on the trip will use their SEL time to reflect on their time in 8th grade and write letters to the incoming 7th graders with advice.

For students not on the trip to California, they will work on a Humanities mini-project that combines content and standards for both ELA and Social Studies. In this project, students will step into the shoes of historical figures facing critical turning points in our past. Using both their ELA and Social Studies skills, they will research a major historical conflict and write a creative "Choose Your Own Adventure" mini-story. Through this mini-project, students will use text evidence to map out both the actual historical outcome and an alternate history based on the choices a reader makes. You can support your student by asking your student which historical event they chose and having them pitch the "choices" to you. Once their draft is complete, let them read it aloud to you so you can test their alternate pathways and see where your decisions lead you!
Aquellos estudiantes que no participen en el viaje a California trabajarán en un miniproyecto de Humanidades, el cual integra contenidos y estándares tanto de Lengua y Literatura como de Ciencias Sociales. En este proyecto, los estudiantes se pondrán en la piel de figuras históricas que se enfrentaron a momentos decisivos en nuestro pasado. Haciendo uso de sus habilidades tanto en Lengua como en Ciencias Sociales, investigarán un conflicto histórico relevante y redactarán una mini historia creativa al estilo de “Elige Tu Propia Aventura.” A través de este miniproyecto, los estudiantes utilizarán evidencias textuales para trazar tanto el desenlace histórico real como una historia alternativa basada en las decisiones que tome el lector. Usted puede apoyar a su hijo preguntándole qué evento histórico ha elegido y pidiéndole que le presente las distintas «opciones» de la historia. Una vez que haya terminado el borrador, pídale que se lo lea en voz alta para que usted pueda poner a prueba las rutas alternativas y descubrir ¡a dónde le llevan sus propias decisiones!
Mathematics
Matemáticas
Students not traveling to California will interpret positive and negative numbers that represent temperature or elevation, and understand the convention of what “below zero” typically means in each of these contexts. They will also compare rational numbers in the context of temperature or elevation, and express the comparisons using the symbols > and <. Last, they will comprehend that two numbers are called “opposites” when they are the same distance from zero, but on different sides of the number line.
Los estudiantes que no viajen a California interpretarán números positivos y negativos que representan temperatura o altitud, y comprenderán la convención de lo que normalmente significa "bajo cero" en cada uno de estos contextos. También compararán números racionales en el contexto de la temperatura o la altitud, y expresarán las comparaciones utilizando los símbolos > y <. Students not on the California trip will work on additional physical sciences activities, specifically magnetism. Students will simulate magnetic fields, learn about magnetic fields and magnetic force evidence, learn about earth’s geomagnetism, and review concepts of potential and kinetic energy and apply them to studying magnetic fields. To support your student’s learning at home.
Los estudiantes que no participen en el viaje a California trabajarán en actividades adicionales de ciencias físicas, específicamente sobre magnetismo.
