Hello 8th Grade Families,
Pathway Seal of Biliteracy Assessment in Spanish: In February, your student will take the Pathway Seal of Biliteracy Assessment in Spanish. This state recognition is awarded in 5th and 8th grade to celebrate students’ progress on their bilingual journey and to encourage continued growth toward multilingualism. To prepare, students will complete brief weekly practice activities in all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These practice activities will be posted on students’ Homeroom Google Classroom and can be completed anytime they have downtime after finishing classwork. Students may also work on them at home. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Janette Guzman, our English Language Program Teacher, at jguzman172@cps.edu.
December Field Trip: The field trip will take place on December 12th, from 8:30am-1:15pm. Students will eat lunch at Fifth Third Arena. Please make sure your child wears appropriate clothing for ice skating, including a coat, gloves, and a hat. Students must bring a loaded Ventra card for the CTA bus. If the Ventra card has been lost, students will need to bring cash for the bus fare. The cost is $2.25 each way, for a total of $4.50. Students may bring cell phones and cash for the vending machines; however, they are responsible for their belongings if they are lost or stolen.
December Fundraiser: Students are invited to join us for Tastes of Winter Wonderland! This is a festive event where students will enjoy winter treats (hot cocoa, ice cream sundaes, cookies, and more), watch a movie, and play interactive games in the gym. The event is on Friday, December 12th from 3:15-4:45pm.The $10 entry fee includes all food and activities. Please submit slips and money by Wednesday, December 10th. We hope all middle school students will participate. All proceeds from this event will directly benefit the 8th grade students’ trip to Sacramento, CA.

Uniform Policy: As a friendly reminder, our school uniform policy requires plain, solid-colored gray or navy blue hoodies and sweaters with no logos of any size. This expectation helps us maintain consistency, reduce distractions, and keep our focus on learning. Please check your child’s hoodies and sweaters before they leave for school to ensure it meets the uniform guidelines. Students wearing non-uniform items will be asked to remove them for the first reminder, families will be notified on the second, and a third violation will result in an SDR. Thank you for your support in maintaining a positive and unified school environment!
Sacramento Trip: Visit this website to access the registration information. Orozco Trip ID is 226539. The travel dates are May 26–28th. The cost per student is $2,259 and the pricing is based on a minimum of 20 students participating. If more than 20 sign up, there is a slight decrease in pricing. Reserve your child’s spot with an initial deposit of $115. An optional Full Refund Program is available for $305. Students under the age of 18 do not require an ID for domestic traveling.
8th Grade Fees: Please submit payment for 8th Grade Fees as soon as possible; you can pay online. Once fees are paid, I can begin ordering items and making reservations right away. The fees are listed below and cover the following:

Graduation Mandatory Fee ($48): cap and gown, ribbons, and diploma cover
Graduation Optional Fee ($26): autograph book and t-shirt

Hola Familias de 8vo Grado,
Caminos Hacia la Alfabetización Bilingüe en Español: En Febrero, su estudiante presentará la Evaluación del Sello de Caminos Hacia la Alfabetización Bilingüe en Español. Este reconocimiento estatal se otorga en 5to y 8vo grado para celebrar el progreso de los estudiantes en su camino bilingüe y fomentar el desarrollo continuo hacia el multilingüismo. Para prepararse, los estudiantes realizarán breves actividades de práctica semanales en las cuatro áreas del lenguaje: comprensión auditiva, expresión oral, lectura, y escritura. Estas actividades de práctica se publicarán en la clase de Google Classroom de su Homeroom y podrán completarlas en cualquier momento después de terminar las tareas de clase. This week’s lesson will help your child explore what motivation is and why it matters. They’ll also reflect on why they feel motivated to do certain things but not others. Tell your child about something that motivates you and why. Ask them what activities they feel motivated to do and what makes those activities enjoyable or important to them.

This week, students will begin writing their final essays on In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. We’ll start this work by reviewing their choices of prompts. After choosing their prompts, students will write the first draft of their essays, including an introduction with a thesis statement, multiple body paragraphs with evidence and reasoning, and a conclusion. You can support your student by asking them about which prompt choice they chose and why, as well as asking to see their completed essay draft before they submit it on Thursday.

This week, students will calculate a missing value for a number puzzle that can be represented by a linear equation in one variable. They will also calculate a value that is a solution to a linear equation in one variable, and explain the steps used to solve. Last, they will describe features of linear equations that have one solution, no solution, or many solutions. To help your students practice at home, ask them to complete skills AA1 - AA10 from IXL, 8th Grade Math.
Esta semana los estudiantes van a calcular el valor desconocido de un rompecabezas de números que puede ser representado por una ecuación lineal con una variable. This week, students will begin their Unit 3 Summative Project: Exploring Rights, Responsibility, and Power in the Community, where they will investigate how real individuals and groups use their voice, power, and civic participation to create change in their communities. Using examples such as March for Our Lives, GoodKids MadCity, LVEJO, the Black Panther Party, Karen Lewis, Chance the Rapper, and others, students will analyze the issue these leaders confronted, the strategies they used to take action, and the impact their work had on protecting rights and promoting the common good. Their final task is to design a mini-exhibit that clearly teaches an audience about the issue, actions, and outcomes of their chosen civic actor. Additionally, students will prepare for their Unit 3 Summative Assessment by completing a Study Guide.
Esta semana, los estudiantes comenzarán su Proyecto Sumativo de la Unidad 3: Explorando los Derechos, la Responsabilidad, y el Poder en la Comunidad. Allí investigarán cómo individuos y grupos reales usan su voz, poder y participación cívica para generar cambios en sus comunidades. Utilizando ejemplos como March for Our Lives, GoodKids MadCity, LVEJO, el Partido Pantera Negra, Karen Lewis, Chance the Rapper y otros, los estudiantes analizarán el problema que enfrentaron estos líderes, las estrategias que utilizaron para actuar y el impacto que su trabajo tuvo en la protección de los derechos y la promoción del bien común. This week students will finish Lesson 6, where they I analyze which combination of metals can create the best battery to power a small motor, analyze how magnetic fields work, and begin Lesson 7, I can explain how energy is transferred and transformed in an electric circuit, and measure the efficiency of a lightbulb. To do this they will research electromagnetism by completing a reading, creating light in a bulb, using a circuit board and a lightbulb. Draw a diagram using the key in Step 1, follow the procedure to test the other items, including with other materials, to see if they can conduct electricity, create series and parallel circuits in Part B, and demonstrate their mastery of circuitry by answering the Analysis Questions.
To support your student’s learning at home, ask them about how they created a circuit in class to power a motor, and how magnetic fields work.
Esta semana, los estudiantes terminarán la Lección 6, donde analizarán qué combinación de metales puede crear la mejor batería para alimentar un motor pequeño, analizarán cómo funcionan los campos magnéticos y comenzarán la Lección 7, donde explicarán cómo se transfiere y transforma la energía en un circuito eléctrico y medirán la eficiencia de una bombilla.
