Hello 8th Grade Families,
Progress Reports: Progress report grades are entered on Tuesday, September 22nd for all classes. Students will be given their progress reports to take home on Thursday, September 24th.
No School: There is no school for students on Friday, September 25th.

Family Photo: Please upload a family photo by Friday, September 25th at 3pm. We will use this photo in an upcoming lesson to support our social-emotional learning goals for this year.
Handbook Acknowledgment: All students received the handbook acknowledgement form last week. Please review the information and return the signed form as soon as possible.
PE Uniforms: Starting October 1st, students must wear their official PE uniform during Physical Education classes. If a student is missing their uniform after this date, school staff will call home so a family member can bring the required clothing. Until official gym uniforms arrive, Mr. Luu has instructed all students to wear general athletic gear to class. 8th Grade has PE on Tuesday and Thursday. More information on ordering, pricing, and pick-up is available through the order form.
STEM After School Program: We have partnered with Rush Education and the Career Hub to offer a FREE Human Body Science after-school program for 6th-8th grade students at Orozco! If interested, please review the details and register your student. The program begins on September 22nd and will run from 3:00-4:30pm on Tuesdays.
End of Year Trip Voting Form: Please vote for your preferred trip destination for our class. The form will close on Friday, September 25th at 3pm. The trip with the majority of votes will be announced in the next newsletter and will include a sample itinerary.
Latin Days at St. Ignatius: On October 17th from 8:30am-2:00pm, students are invited to attend Latin Days, an interactive event celebrating the rich tradition of Latin and Greek at Saint Ignatius College Prep; registration is required. Through games, activities, and hands-on learning, participants will explore the fascinating world of the ancient Greeks and Romans while discovering how the study of the classics continues to shape a Jesuit education today.
8th Grade Fees: Please submit payment for 8th Grade Fees as soon as possible; you can pay online. Once fees are paid, I can begin ordering items and making reservations right away. The fees are listed below and cover the following:
8th Grade Student Fee ($100): educational program enhancements and subscriptions
Graduation Mandatory Fee ($50): cap and gown, ribbons, and diploma cover
Graduation Optional Fee ($30): autograph book and t-shirt
Graduation Activities ($120): flowers for graduation ceremony, banquet, and transportation to the banquet
Adding an Additional Recipient to the Newsletter: The newsletter is currently sent to the first contact listed for each student in the CPS Aspen Parent Portal. If you would like to add another family member from your household to receive the weekly newsletter, please fill out this form so they can be included in future emails.
GoCPS High School Applications: The GoCPS application window opens on Sept. 9 (10am) and closes Nov. 13 (5pm). There is no advantage to applying early, so take time to research programs and rank options carefully. Please don't click “Create A New Account", everyone already has an account set up. Click “Login to an Existing Account” and “Password Reset ” to gain access.
Daniel Murphy Scholarship: This scholarship is now open and closes October 1st. This is for a specific list of High Schools. Please view the eligibility criteria before you apply.

Uniformes de Educación Física: A partir del 1 de Octubre, los estudiantes deberán llevar su uniforme oficial de Educación Física durante las clases de esta asignatura. Si un estudiante no lleva el uniforme después de esa fecha, el personal de la escuela llamará a casa para que un familiar pueda traer la ropa requerida. This week students will have a High School lesson about GoCPS. This will include how to navigate the application, overview of programs and calculating their total 7th Grade GPA.

This week, we will finish work with Part One of Life of Pi by Yann Martel with a graded discussion and a short RACES response on Monday. Then, we will begin the first half of Part Two on Tuesday by reviewing the concept of authorial choice and another example of a close reading. Students will have the reminder of the week to read, annotate, and engage with the novel during class time. At home, you can support your student by posing a hypothetical "what would you do?" scenario—like being stranded on a desert island—and debating what instinct or item would be most essential to survive those first few days. Ask them to compare what they would do with what Pi does now that he is stranded on the lifeboat with the other animals.
Esta semana concluiremos el trabajo sobre la primera parte de *La vida de Pi*, de Yann Martel, mediante un debate evaluado y una breve respuesta siguiendo el método RACES el lunes. El martes iniciaremos la primera mitad de la segunda parte repasando el concepto de las decisiones del autor y analizando otro ejemplo de lectura detallada. Los estudiantes dispondrán del resto de la semana para leer, anotar y trabajar con la novela durante el horario de clase. This week we practiced figuring out missing information in a sequence of numbers in order to find the growth number (common difference or common ratio). Also, we added different starting numbers instead of “1” to see how it changes the recursive and explicit equation. We continue to develop equations from a sequence of numbers, a table of values and a graph. We still need to practice moving fluidly between sequences of numbers, a table of values, a graph and an equation. Next week we will finish the unit and work on identifying more arithmetic and geometric sequences from different stories of scenarios. At home practice writing a table of values that are increasing and decreasing geometrically and arithmetically and develop an equation. Lastly, try different starting points for “x” or intervals of “x” to see how it affects the final equations. The unit test will be at the end of the week. Please help with going over the review packet we start this week.
Esta semana nos ejercitamos en encontrar datos faltantes dentro de una serie de números para calcular el factor de cambio (razón común o diferencia común). También variamos el término de origen utilizando valores distintos a "1" para analizar el impacto en la expresión explícita y recursiva. Seguimos construyendo ecuaciones usando tablas, gráficas y sucesiones. Requerimos mayor fluidez para convertir datos entre tablas, representaciones gráficas, ecuaciones y secuencias. En la siguiente semana cerraremos la unidad reconociendo patrones geométricos y aritméticos en diversos contextos narrativos. Como práctica en casa, elaboren tablas con datos crecientes o decrecientes de forma aritmética y geométrica para construir su ecuación. Finalmente, utilicen distintos valores iniciales o rangos para la variable "x" observando el resultado. La evaluación del tema será al término de la semana. Apoyen a sus hijos repasando el paquete de preparación que asignaremos esta semana.

We are wrapping up our first unit. This week, students will complete a Study Guide for HW, it is due Friday morning. Students will also complete their end of unit project Monday-Thursday in class and take their Unit Test on Friday. In this project students will investigate how individuals and groups drive social change by researching real-world case studies and analyzing the strengths and limitations of different methods of action. They will then apply these insights by designing their own civic action plan—choosing a local school or community issue, identifying the rights and responsibilities involved, and proposing concrete steps to promote the common good. To share their proposals, students will produce a creative final deliverable, such as a short video, infographic, or pamphlet.
Estamos concluyendo nuestra primera unidad. Esta semana, los estudiantes completarán una guía de estudio como tarea; la fecha límite de entrega es el Viernes por la mañana. This week will analyze how Newton’s Laws affect our everyday world. They will be able to explain the key principles behind Newton’s Laws, identify which of Newton’s Laws apply to specific diagrams, and explain how an object affects an object’s motion. To do this they will explain real life scenarios by applying Newton’s Laws to them. To support your student learning at home, ask them about how Newton’s Laws of Motion affect our everyday activities, such as driving, moving our bodies, projectile motion such as soccer balls and baseballs, and objects at rest tending to stay at rest and objects in motion tending to stay in motion.
