Hello 8th Grade Families,
Labor Day: No school on Monday, September 1st.
STAR 360 Testing: Students will take the Math test on Wednesday, September 3d and the ELA test on Thursday, September 4th. Students will only take the tests in English.
Curriculum Night: Join us on Friday, September 5th, from 3:05–4:30 PM to meet your child’s teachers and learn more about curriculum, policies, and classroom structures.
Homework Packets: Middle school homework packets will begin going home on Monday, September 8th. More details will be shared during Curriculum Night.
8th Grade Fees: Please submit payment for 8th Grade Fees as soon as possible; you can pay online. Once fees are paid, I can begin ordering items and making reservations right away. The fees are listed below and cover the following:
8th Grade Student Fee ($85): educational program enhancements and subscriptions
Graduation Mandatory Fee ($48): cap and gown, ribbons, and diploma cover
Graduation Optional Fee ($26): autograph book and t-shirt
Graduation Activities ($90): flowers for graduation ceremony, banquet, and transportation to the banquet
In Need of CPS Parent Volunteers: We rely on volunteers to support us with chaperoning field trips and supporting us with after-school events. Please consider completing the process for a Level 1 or Level 2 volunteer. A Level 1 volunteer requires fingerprints and a TB test, but allows more flexibility to work with students; we strongly encourage Level 1 applications. A Level 2 volunteer only requires an ID, but has limited flexibility to work with students; a Level 2 volunteer can chaperone field trips and support at after-school events with a teacher nearby.
GoCPS High School Applications: Applications open on September 23rd. Ms. Cain will start High School lessons in September. More information is coming soon.
Daniel Murphy Scholarship: The application is now open and closes on October 1st. Learn more about the scholarship here.

Día del Trabajo: No hay clases el Lunes 1 de Septiembre.
Prueba STAR 360: Los estudiantes tomarán el examen de matemáticas el miércoles 3 de septiembre y el examen de lectura el jueves 4 de septiembre. Los estudiantes tomarán los exámenes solo en inglés.
Noche de Currículo: Acompáñenos el Viernes 5 de Septiembre, de 3:05-4:30pm, para conocer a los maestros de su hijo/a y aprender más sobre el currículo, las políticas, y la estructura de las clases.
Paquetes de Tarea: Los paquetes de tarea de escuela intermedia comenzarán a enviarse a casa el Lunes 8 de Septiembre. Se compartirán más detalles durante la Noche de Currículo.
Cuotas de 8vo Grado: Por favor, envíe el pago de las cuotas de 8vo grado lo antes posible; puede pagar en linea. Una vez que se paguen las cuotas, puedo comenzar a pedir los artículos y hacer las reservas de inmediato. Las cuotas se enumeran a continuación y cubren lo siguiente:

Necesitamos Padres Voluntarios de CPS: Dependemos de voluntarios que nos ayuden a acompañar los paseos escolares y a brindar apoyo con los eventos extraescolares. Considere completar el proceso para ser voluntario de Nivel 1 o Nivel 2. Un voluntario de Nivel 1 requiere huellas dactilares y una prueba de tuberculosis, pero permite más flexibilidad para trabajar con los estudiantes; recomendamos enfáticamente las solicitudes de Nivel 1. Un voluntario de Nivel 2 solo requiere una identificación, pero tiene una flexibilidad limitada para trabajar con los estudiantes; un voluntario de Nivel 2 puede acompañar los paseos escolares y brindar apoyo en los eventos extraescolares con un maestro cerca.

This week, students will begin exploring their future high school pathways. As part of this work, they will design a flyer showing pride in their goals - whether that’s a specific high school they aspire to attend, a program they are excited about, or the personal values they want to carry with them into high school. Students will reflect on their choices and create a visual representation of their vision for the future, celebrating their strengths and ambitions.
Esta semana, los estudiantes comenzarán a explorar sus futuros caminos en la secundaria. Como parte de este trabajo, completarán un folleto que muestre orgullo por sus metas, ya sea la secundaria a la que aspiran asistir, un programa que les entusiasma, o los valores personales que desean mantener en la secundaria. This week, students officially begin our first full unit in ELA! To do so, we will start with an introduction to ekphrastic poetry (poems that are based on visual artworks). To do so, we will practice as a class using the poem “Matisse’s Dance” by Natalie Safir, which will help us identify steps we can use to analyze the poem, the artwork, and make connections between the two. Students will then begin using these skills on their own with two additional poems: “Girl at Sewing Machine” by Mary Leader as well as a poem of their choice to be read in small groups. You can support your student this week by having them explain what ekphrastic poetry is, sharing the steps we use in our reading logs to analyze ekphrastic poems, and/or which choice poem they read in their small groups and why.
Esta semana, ¡los estudiantes comienzan oficialmente su primera unidad completa de Lengua y Literatura Inglesas! Para ello, comenzaremos con una introducción a la poesía ecfrástica (poemas basados en obras de arte visual). Para ello, practicaremos en clase con el poema "La danza de Matisse" de Natalie Safir, lo que nos ayudará a identificar los pasos para analizar el poema, la obra de arte y establecer conexiones entre ambos. Después, los estudiantes empezarán a usar estas habilidades por su cuenta con dos poemas adicionales: "La chica de la máquina de coser" de Mary Leader y un poema de su elección para leer en grupos pequeños. This week, students will be taking their Beginning of Year Star360 Math Test on Wednesday. During our regular math sessions, students will identify corresponding points before and after a transformation. We will use the terms translation, rotation, and reflection to precisely describe transformations. Last, we will apply transformations to a polygon on a grid given the coordinates of its vertices. You can support your student this week by encouraging them to practice plotting points on the coordinate system and reviewing lessons 1- 4 of Unit 1 on Transformations.
Esta semana, los estudiantes tomarán el examen Star360, el día Miércoles. Durante la clase regular de matemáticas, vamos a identificar puntos correspondientes antes y después de una transformación. También vamos a usar los términos trasladar, rotar y reflejar para describir transformaciones. This week’s lesson, Protection of Our Rights in the Constitution, focuses on how constitutional principles and rights empower civic action. Students will examine examples such as VOYCE (Voices of Youth in Chicago Education) to see how groups have used these rights to influence laws and policies, and they will discuss the steps people can take to promote fairness and protect rights in their own communities. You can support your student’s learning at home by asking them to explain one constitutional right they studied and then talking about how your family or community has used that right (such as free speech, assembly, or voting) to make a difference.
La lección de esta semana, “Protección de Nuestros Derechos en la Constitución," se centra en cómo los principios y derechos constitucionales impulsan la acción cívica. This week students will use graphs to describe motion, create a motion graph, identify how different line segments illustrate objects at rest and objects in motion on a graph and match descriptions of motion with corresponding graphs. In addition to a lecture and reading procedure, they will check velocity calculations, and be introduced to new terms: speed, motion, velocity, acceleration.Finally, they will examine the graphs and solve the word problems. To support your student’s learning at home, ask them how we used graphs to illustrate objects’ motion.
Esta semana, los estudiantes usarán gráficas para describir el movimiento, crearán una gráfica de movimiento, identificarán cómo diferentes segmentos de línea ilustran objetos en reposo y en movimiento en una gráfica y relacionarán las descripciones de movimiento con las gráficas correspondientes. Además de una explicación y un procedimiento de lectura, revisarán los cálculos de velocidad y aprenderán nuevos términos: rapidez, movimiento, velocidad y aceleración.
