Hello 6th Grade Families,
December Field Trip: The field trip will take place on December 12th, from 8:30am-1:15pm. Students will eat lunch at Fifth Third Arena. Please make sure your child wears appropriate clothing for ice skating, including a coat, gloves, and a hat. Students must bring a loaded Ventra card for the CTA bus. If the Ventra card has been lost, students will need to bring cash for the bus fare. The cost is $2.25 each way, for a total of $4.50. Students may bring cell phones and cash for the vending machines; however, they are responsible for their belongings if they are lost or stolen.
December Fundraiser: Students are invited to join us for Tastes of Winter Wonderland! This is a festive event where students will enjoy winter treats (hot cocoa, ice cream sundaes, cookies, and more), watch a movie, and play interactive games in the gym. The event is on Friday, December 12th from 3:15-4:45pm.The $10 entry fee includes all food and activities. Please submit slips and money by Wednesday, December 10th. We hope all middle school students will participate. All proceeds from this event will directly benefit the 8th grade students’ trip to Sacramento, CA.
Spirit Week: Students may dress out of uniform on the following days as long as they follow each day’s theme:

Fri 12/19: Holiday Colors
Uniform Policy: As a friendly reminder, our school uniform policy requires plain, solid-colored gray or navy blue hoodies and sweaters with no logos of any size. This expectation helps us maintain consistency, reduce distractions, and keep our focus on learning. Please check your child’s hoodies and sweaters before they leave for school to ensure it meets the uniform guidelines. Students wearing non-uniform items will be asked to remove them for the first reminder, families will be notified on the second, and a third violation will result in an SDR. Thank you for your support in maintaining a positive and unified school environment!

Paseo de Diciembre: El paseo tomará lugar el 12 de Diciembre, de 8:30am-1:15pm. Los estudiantes almorzarán en el Fifth Third Arena. Asegúrese de que su hijo/a lleve ropa adecuada para patinar sobre hielo, incluyendo abrigo, guantes, y gorro. Los estudiantes deben traer una tarjeta Ventra con saldo para el autobús de la CTA. Política de Uniforme: Les recordamos que nuestra política de uniforme escolar pide sudaderas y suéteres lisos, de color gris o azul marino, sin logotipos de ningún tamaño. Esta norma nos ayuda a mantener la uniformidad, reducir las distracciones y centrarnos en el aprendizaje. Por favor, revisen las sudaderas y suéteres de sus hijos antes de que salgan para la escuela para asegurarse de que cumplen con las normas del uniforme. A los estudiantes que lleven prendas que no correspondan al uniforme se les pedirá que se las quiten tras el primer aviso; se notificará a las familias tras el segundo aviso, y una tercera infracción resultará en documentación con un SDR. ¡Gracias por su colaboración para mantener un ambiente escolar positivo y unido!

This week, students will finish last week’s lesson by continuing to learn about the brain’s ability to grow and change when they practice challenging things. Having a growth mindset supports your child’s success in school and in life. If you haven’t already, tell your child about a time you had to learn something new. Explain whether it was hard to learn and how you learned it. Ask your child if there’s anything they would like to learn to do this year.
Esta semana, los estudiantes terminarán la lección de la semana pasada continuando el aprendizaje sobre la capacidad del cerebro para crecer y cambiar cuando practican cosas desafiantes. This week in ELA, students will collaborate in their assigned small groups on the Body Biography Project. With their team members, students will create a life-size portrait of their group’s chosen short story from last week. Students will illustrate the character using their characterization from last week using both visuals and textual evidence. Students will present their posters to the class to share about their short stories and main characters. You can support your student by asking them which part of their poster they are responsible for presenting to the class and having them practice this with you at home using good eye contact, volume, and pacing.
Esta semana en Lengua y Literatura Inglesas, los estudiantes colaborarán en sus grupos pequeños asignados en el Proyecto de Biografía Corporal. Junto con sus compañeros, crearán un retrato a tamaño real del cuento que eligieron de la semana pasada. Ilustrarán al personaje usando la caracterización de la semana pasada, utilizando tanto elementos visuales como evidencia textual. Presentarán sus pósteres a la clase para compartir información sobre sus cuentos y personajes principales. Puede apoyar a su estudiante preguntándole qué parte de su póster debe presentar a la clase y pidiéndole que practique esto con usted en casa, utilizando buen contacto visual, volumen y ritmo.

This week, 6th grade students will have their Unit 3 Final Test. This unit focused on exploring ratios, extending students’ understanding to practical contexts like recipes, paint mixtures, speed (relating time to distance), and pricing (relating quantities to prices). The unit introduced new tools such as discrete diagrams and double-number line diagrams to help students analyze and think critically about equivalent ratios. To help your student review the material at home, please ask them to complete skills U1 - U10 from IXL, 6th grade math.
Esta semana tendremos el examen final de la unidad 2. Esta unidad se enfocó en explorar proporciones, y aplicarlas para resolver problemas acerca de recetas, mezclas, velocidad y precios. También se introdujeron conceptos de diagramas y líneas dobles para analizar proporciones equivalentes. Para ayudar a su estudiante repasar para el examen, por favor pídale que complete las actividades U1 - U10 de IXL, 6to grado de matemáticas.

This week, students will begin their Unit 3 Summative Project: The Rise, Conquest, and Fall of Empires, where they will investigate how ancient empires rose to power, expanded their influence, developed internal challenges, and ultimately declined. Students will analyze multiple causes and effects using class texts, videos, and notes, then bring the history of their chosen empire (Rome, Qin, Aztec, or Mali) to life through a visual “Empire Story” (one-pager, storyboard, or children’s book) and a short written analysis. Additionally, students will prepare for their Unit 3 Summative Assessment by completing a Study Guide.
Esta semana, los estudiantes comenzarán su Proyecto Sumativo de la Unidad 3: El Auge, la Conquista, y la Caída de los Imperios. Allí investigarán cómo los antiguos imperios alcanzaron el poder, expandieron su influencia, enfrentaron desafíos internos y finalmente decayeron. Analizarán diversas causas y efectos utilizando textos de clase, videos y apuntes, y luego darán vida a la historia del imperio elegido (Roma, Qin, Azteca, o Mali) mediante una "Historia del Imperio" visual (una página, un guion gráfico, o un libro infantil) y un breve análisis escrito. Además, se prepararán para su Evaluación Sumativa de la Unidad 3 completando un Guía de Estudio.

This week students will investigate groundwater. After receiving a lecture and taking notes, students will explain how water travels throughout the earth and create a concept map of the key terms. To do this they will complete the analysis questions to demonstrate their knowledge, investigate groundwater by setting up the experiment as described, follow the procedure, adding water to the gravel and sand, carefully as described, analyze your results by completing the analysis questions. And use the dice and Water Cycle Cards, to examine how water changes states, and record the results. To support your student’s learning at home, ask them about how water travels throughout the earth.
Esta semana, los estudiantes investigarán las aguas subterráneas. Tras recibir una explicación y tomar apuntes, explicarán cómo el agua viaja por la Tierra y crearán un mapa conceptual con los términos clave. Para ello, responderán a las preguntas de análisis para demostrar sus conocimientos.
