Technology Skills
Technology Skills, K-12 Scope & Sequence
Technology Skills instruction (also called Digital Literacy Instruction or Digital Citizenship instruction) serves a lot of purposes, including:
Ensuring that students have the skills to operate effeciently, safely and effectively in digital environments (on line/on a computer)
Helping teachers plan for instruction by ensuring that students have predictable levels of technology skills
Enabling the use of technology to support content area learning
Providing opportunities for vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment and teacher collaboration by establishing a continuity of instruction
Framework for developing technology integration in a way that prepares students for content learning, real-world practices and success on computer-based testing
Teaches students important skills to recognize, avoid and appropriately deal with online hazards (from email viruses to cyberbullying)
Navigating the Technology Skills Scope and Sequence
The CPP Technology Skills Scope and Sequence outlines skills students need to learn in seven categories:
Basic Operations (how to operate digital devices)
Keyboarding
Content Creation (creating and showcasing their own digital work, from text documents to presentations and beyond)
Mathematical Applications (using technology for analysis, numerical and scientific investigations)
Digital Citizenship (using technology safely, respectfully and appropriately)
Locating Information (utilizing technology for research and learning)
Locating and Organizing Resources (managing and organizing digital resources from text documents to important websites)
Navigating the Scope & Sequences
Skills are organized into the skill category groupings. Three levels of instruction are indicated for each skill:
I: This is the grade level at which a skill is Introduced. Teachers should assume that this is the first time most students will have learned about this skill, and don't have prior knowledge or practice in it
R: A skill marked with an "R" at a certain grade level indicates that this learning is still being Reinforced. Students have heard of or practiced this skill before, but (possible extensive) review or re-teaching will still be required
A: By this time, students should have enough practice with a skill that they can Apply the learning automatically or with little review.
