Short cut to all Tour Routes: https://ridewithgps.com/collections/55243
Time marches on. Remember when we used to navigate by folding auto maps and taking pictures with film cameras? Well those days are behind us. If you remember that Montreal Trip in 2019, we started supporting Garmin GPS units with Chuck Swaney laying out the routes using RideWithGPS (RWGPS) and Brian Cox providing the tech support each morning with loading up the units with the daily maps.
For this trip we’ll be encouraging folks to use their smartphones (android and apple) with the RWGPS app. Garmin GPS will still be supported, but it will be easier for all involved if we rely on the RWGPS approach.
First things first, you will need a RWGPS starter (free) account. If you already have a Ride With GPS account, skip the following paragraph.
To set up your account, you will need a userid (email) and password, so write both down, as you will need it later when you install the app. Setting up the account is best done from a desktop/laptop, as it is easier to preview and learn about RideWithGPS from the website rather than the app. For more information regarding the use of Ride With GPS account: click here on this link: https://ridewithgps.com and select the “Starter” and follow directions.
After you have registered your “starter account”, go to the following link to add access to the “Cavaliers de La Fayette” club:
https://ridewithgps.com/auto_approve/Club/8375/3VywSUyVqE1U4ljo
You will receive an email at your userid account indicating that you have been accepted into the club. This can take a few minutes. The email will ask you to sign in to your account and click on the club link (Lafayette bust painting) on the left side of your account’s dashboard page.
Next after your account is established install the app on your phone, go to the google play or app store and find “Ride with GPS”. Install it (free) and supply the userid (email) and password you put in when you signed up for your account above.

Using the app - During a ride each cue sheet turn will be announced via the app. To use this feature we recommend that riders use wireless headphones. Conductive headphones work best and will not impede hearing other external sounds. Click here to view a wide selection of
headsets. We do not recommend Inductiv brand headsets because of reported poor sound Quality.
The audio cues will still work if your phone is turned off and in your pocket. Mounting your phone on the handlebars allows you to see cues as they pop up, or a cue list. You can also download the routes to another device (Garmin, Wahoo etc.) from the website and not use a phone at all.
Next step (Optional) , if you would like to mount your phone on your handlebars, we recommend that you purchase Quad Lock which includes a handlebar mount and new phone case. The mounts with rubber bands are pretty flimsy and we have seen phones crash to the ground after a hard bounce.
If you would like paper cue sheets, they can be printed from the website club account. There is an option to save them as PDF files, in either full page list form or quarter sheet folding form.
Final words of advice:
Have the RWGPS app on your phone as soon as possible practice using the order to familiarize yourself with it well in advance of the trip. If you want to create a route on your laptop: click here.
Since RWGPS is a phone app, it will require a smart phone with a good battery and the ability to charge the phone and other accessory devices en route if necessary, particularly on long days.
Please let Bruce know if you need help with printing cue sheets if that is your preferred mode of navigating.
