Schools have always played an important role in the social and emotional development of youth. Teaching and learning are inherently social activities. The ability to assess your own knowledge and regulate your emotional state is vital to success and learning.
We prevent and address bullying by teaching conflict resolution, and help students identify their feelings and motivations. We ask them to take personal responsibility and consider how their behavior may have impacted others and understand the other person's perspective—the same way we teach students to conduct a character analysis in Language Arts.
We teach about the power of a positive mindset and emotional regulation because brain science proves that these impact complex thought and performance. We talk to students about the importance of sleep, nutrition, and planning as they prepare for exams and teach coping skills to address anxiety and depression.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is no different than the Character Education that schools have taught for decades. It can be defined as the process through which individuals develop knowledge and use skills in order to: create and maintain healthy relationships; manage emotions; understand and empathize with others; establish a positive identity; set and achieve goals; and make just and caring decisions.
We teach students to be assertive about their needs, because self efficacy is fundamental to academic achievement. We teach them decision-making skills because these are critical in school, life and work. Decades of research in human development, neuroscience, and educational policy has established that social and emotional development is essential for success in learning and life.
7 Mindsets is an evidence based, web based guide to positive, healthy living and well-being used in our Coweta elementary schools. Happiness and success are not predicated on what we know or where we come from; it is predicated on how we think. The 7 Mindsets have been designed to promote self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making in students and include seven basic ideas and attitudes: (1) Everything is Possible, (2) Passion First, (3) We Are Connected, (4) 100% Accountable, (5) Attitude of Gratitude, (6) Live to Give, and (7) The Time is Now. This requires the whole school to be engaged with a weekly classroom curriculum and daily activities as well as principal announcements, integrated with class Dojo and even notes to parents about the mindset of the week.
Second Step is an evidence based web based social skills program used for our Coweta students in middle schools, White Oak and Canongate Elementary. It is designed to reduce impulsive, high-risk, and aggressive behaviors and increase children’s social competence and other protective factors leading to improved academic learning. The program builds on cognitive behavioral intervention models integrated with social learning theory, empathy research, and social information-processing research. Second Step is intended to teach children to identify and understand their own and others’ emotions, choose positive goals, and successfully manage reactions when emotionally aroused. The middle school curriculum is made up of 26 online lessons that are 25 minutes long and include advisory activities.
