In an effort to instill a lifelong love for reading in each of our students this year, we will participate in an independent reading program outlined in Donalyn Miller’s book, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child. Miller contends that “anyone who calls herself or himself a reader can tell you that it starts with encountering great books, heartfelt recommendations, and a community of readers who share this passion” (4). With Miller’s model as a guide, students will participate in a reading workshop approach to independent reading with the key components of time, choice, responses, community, and structure.
All students are a part of a classroom community where books will be discussed in meaningful ways so that members are contributing to the learning of the group. The school’s culture of literacy and learning embraces reading, and we encourage all students to read independently each and every day.
Reading is the cornerstone from which all other academic achievements build, and it is the focus of our classroom activities this year!
Students have 41 calendar weeks, August 4th - May 15th, to complete the challenge. Books over 350 pages may count as two books toward the requirement. This does not apply to ebooks or graphic novels. Please see Mrs. Doonan for more details. Happy Reading!
