Frequently Asked Questions

What is school art therapy?

The goal of school art therapy is to help each student reach their fullest potential both academically and socially. Under the guidance and support of a trained art therapist, a student will identify and utilize their unique creative process to make positive changes to one’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors to be successful at school and beyond.

School Art Therapy can be provided in a variety of ways. Here at Cove, we offer art therapy supports at the school community, classroom/small group and individual levels.

School community art projects will be available for participation from our students, staff & families. Community art opportunities can encourage members a sense of belonging and inclusion.

Classroom and small groups allow students the opportunity to safely express themselves while practicing cooperation, building a relationships and sense of belonging with fellow group members.

A student may be referred to individual art therapy to receive support in cognitive growth, mastery of sensory-motor skills, or positive adjustment to the classroom experience. Speak to your student's social worker to learn more.

What are the benefits of art therapy supports in schools?

Unlike traditional art classes where student success is measured by the development of artistic skill through the elements of art, school art therapy provides students a safe & predictable setting to explore explore their own SEL & unique problem solving skills through creative art directives. We focus on the student's process rather than finished art product to determine success.

With the support of a trained art therapist, students can practice SEL skill development within all five CASEL competencies and support creative thinking development (Studio Habits of Mind (SHoM)) during facilitated creative art activities. It is our goal to ensure students are successful both within and outside of the classroom.
