The Social Studies program is a NCSS (National Council on the Social Studies) Standards Based program which offers students opportunities to pursue the study of American history through the use of varied instructional practices and an array of formative and summative assessments. The major areas of study in the three sequential classes include a chronological discussion of American history topics from the early Native Americans to the present. Rhode Island GSEs for Civics, Historical Perspectives and RI History are embedded where appropriate in grades 9- 11, and also, where applicable in Social Studies electives. Applied Learning Tasks are given in every class. These tasks help the students complete the required graduation requirements and the student’s proficiency based graduation requirements. Elective offerings complement the history curriculum. Students seeking a humanities area of study in college or on a Social Studies Pathway are encouraged to take four years of Social Studies classes.
Students also have the opportunity to take College Board approved Advanced Placement courses in United States History, American Government and Politics, African American Studies, and Psychology.
