WeBuild2Sustain
This Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) represents an interactive and cooperation-based project (since 2021) that fostered intercultural understanding between some undergraduate students of Ruhr-West University of Applied Science (HRW) in Germany and Covenant University (Civil Engineering and Building Technology) in Nigeria. The collaboration took place as a cooperative playing of an online simulation game (Chameleon). Chameleon was created to teach the students the functionality of the construction industry through the method of game-based learning. While playing the game the students have to manage a construction company in the ways of acquiring tenders, hiring or firing workers, as well as buying or selling construction equipment. The construction sector within the game constantly changed, so the students were required to make appropriate adjustments to the gameplay.
WASH Environments in preschool settings
A collaborative effort between Melanie Lührmann (Royal Holloway University of London, UK), Isaac Akinwumi (Covenant University) and Alex Akinwumi (Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Wesley Guild) investigated the state of water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in 70 daycare centres or preschools in Ota, Nigeria. The project was geared at reducing under-five mortality in Nigeria via improving water supply, sanitation and hygiene. Through the support of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, handwashing buckets with taps and soaps were provided to the 70 daycare centres or preschools to improve handwashing hygiene among children and carers and to prevent or minimise the spread of COVID-19 during the pandemic. The findings of our research were presented in a webinar co-organised by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR), Covenant University (Nigeria), The World Bank, Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL, UK), and the International Development arm of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS, UK).
