Cory D. Meals, Ph.D.

Cory Meals specializes in instrumental music education and research, working to connect academic studies with practical applications in school and university music programs.


His research explores the intricate dynamics within and between musical ensembles, examining intra-ensemble coordination, diversity within repertoire choice, and the ways in which ensemble praxis spreads across communities of practice. Dr. Meals has published in journals such as Frontiers in Psychology, Music and Science, and the Journal of Research in Music Education, as well as at conferences across North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Additionally, he contributes analysis efforts to the Institute for Composer Diversity and serves on advisory boards promoting diversity initiatives like the Mexican Repertoire Initiative and the On the List Project.


A native of northwestern Pennsylvania, Dr. Meals obtained his bachelor's degree from VanderCook College of Music, a master's degree in wind conducting from the University of Houston, and a doctorate in music education from the University of Washington. He has a successful track record as a band director in Texas public schools, having served in the Keller, Klein, and Waller school districts. In 2017, Dr. Meals joined the faculty of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston after serving as an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Kennesaw State University.
