Grading in the primary grades is rubric based. There is no specific number correlation. Primary grading is designed to show growth and grasp of concepts. There is a range with the letter value which teachers use to evaluate a student’s grasp of a concept. For example, in a math performance assessment on the concept of regrouping, a student has demonstrated by the work shown and understanding of the concept but makes a computation error, a point system would mark the entire problem incorrect rather than indicating that some knowledge has been acquired. Similarly in a writing assessment a student may correctly relate a cause/effect or inference but doesn’t form the sentence correctly or has numerous spelling/grammar errors. The use of rubrics in the primary grades allows the teacher to assess the continued acquisition of skills. There is fluidity in the letter grades in the primary grades which allows the teacher to assess and regroup students to aid in their growth.
