Servant Leadership

Speaker - Joan Liu

In 2018, University of Texas at Tyler awarded 60 Nepali students full scholarships. And then, due to a budgetary error, these scholarships were taken away - and just like that, 60 students lost their access to higher education, global mobility, and opportunity. Joan Liu, a bystander and HS counselor, stepped forward to galvanize a movement to successfully re-seat these students at new institutions.

This is an interesting case study about taking responsibility when you don't have to; as well as servant leadership, bystander involvement, and how to leverage scarce resources to solve seemingly insurmountable problems. Learn how a bottom-up approach can make as much difference as a top-down one; how to trust yourself when you are in the minority; and how to build ad-hoc structures and teams in a high pressure situation.

Legal Obligations as a Leader

Speaker - Lisa Hernandez

In this session, we will explore compliance and some of the specific legal obligations of which leaders must be mindful. Never fear, though, we will discuss not only which obligations should be top of mind for leaders, but also how and to whom these risks may be appropriately delegated. As most lawyers know, knowing the answer is not nearly as important as knowing where to go to find it. We will cover topical areas including fiduciary duties, civil rights/employment law, and some best practices in terms of documentation and record keeping. We will also explore why culture and compliance with the *spirit* of the law (rather than robotic compliance with the *letter* of the law) is so critical when it comes to effective, inspiring, and engaging leadership.
