In the male reproductive system the seminal vesicles and prostate are absent. There are two organs that are needed for producing semen.
Testis: Also known as gonads. They are located along the chicken's back above the kidneys. They produce sperm and send it to the vas deferens.
vas deferens: This is also known as the sperm ducts. It stores the sperm. It is a muscular tube that connects from the urethra through the ejaculatory duct.
In the female reproductive system the left ovary and oviduct continue to develop after the embryonic stage.
Infundibulum~ This is the portion of the oviduct that catches the oocyte (fertilization). The oocyte spends 15-17 minutes in here before being directed it to the Magnum.
Magnum ~ The oocyte spends 3 hours in the magnum while the glands in the oviduct produce and secrete a thick albumen forms around the ooctye.
Isthmus ~ The oocyte spends around 75 minutes (1-2 hours) in the isthmus. This is the site where the inner and outer shell membrane of the egg forms.
Uterus/ Shell Gland ~ Here the egg spends 20 hours while the shell forms and pigmentation is added.
Vagina - Segment of the oviduct between the shell gland and cloaca. Sperm are stored in tubal glands at the junction between the vagina and shell gland.
Vent/Cloaca ~ This is an opening which allows the chicken to lay her eggs. This is also the site where the transfer of sperm to egg happens.
Post- ovulatory follicles ~ This is what remains after the ovulation of the oocyte
The ovaries are located on the left side of the abdominal cavity. The largest follicles on the ovary are labeled F1 meaning they are ready to get fertilized and ovulate. F2 will normally ovulate the next day. F3 will come after that. Then F4 and F5.
Then you have premature follicles.
~ Small yellow follicles will replace the large yellow ones as they begin ovulating. Which will then get replaced by the small white follicles.
Stigma ~ Is an area on the follicle where the yolk is released into the oviduct.
