Training Materials and Standard Operating Procedures

This section provides training resources and guides and tips for conducting effective trainings. We have also included resources on Standard Operating Procedures, or SOPs.

SOPs are documents that outline how to complete a task. An SOP doesn’t need to be complicated – in fact, it should be as concise as possible and provide step-by-step instructions for a specific task. While the thought of developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for your farm may seem daunting, or simply like a bureaucratic waste of time, these standardized protocols are simply a way to capture routine farm processes and ensure that they happen the same way each time. SOPs come up a lot when talking about produce safety and complying with the sanitation standards of FSMA’s Produce Rule or 3rd-party food safety audits, but their usefulness goes well beyond jumping through food safety hoops. A well-written SOP can help you save time, train workers, manage pests, and put out a more consistent product.

New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH)

In New York, NYCAMH provides farm safety services at little or no cost to agricultural operations of all types. Their experienced educators and trainers offer a variety of programs that promote safe and healthy farming by teaching safe work practices to audiences including youth, agribusiness professionals and farm workers. All of their trainings are available in English and in Spanish.

Worker Protection Standard Videos

Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Training Video for Agricultural Workers. EPA-approved video (22 minutes) for training agricultural workers with the expanded training content prescribed in the revised 2015 standard. For use in 2018 and beyond, from the Pesticide Educational Resources Collaborative(PERC). English and Spanish versions. (EPA Worker PST 00028).

Produce Safety Training for Farm Workers

Fresh Produce Safety: Hand Washing(3 minutes) in English and Spanish. Developed by the University of Arizona and Oklahoma State University

Forklift Safety Training Videos and Training Resources

A Guide to Forklift Safety (2 parts, about 20 minutes total) This video program was produced by the State of California to assist forklift trainers with their safety training efforts and gives a brief overview of forklift training procedures and methods which may be employed.

It should be used in conjunction with the more comprehensive written manual "A Trainers Guide To Forklift Safety". The training covers OSHA requirements for forklift safety. The videos are in English (English part 1) and (English part 2) and in Spanish (Spanish part 1) and (Spanish part 2)

Fork Lift Safety Manual for Instructors in English (State of California) The goal of this guide is to assist workplace instructors with forklift safety-training programs.
