This course taught me the pieces that comprise a health promotion program. With this, it also allowed me to plan out a program that encompassed physical fitness, nutrition, and mental health among college students; primarily first year students. This course helped me develop various skills such as developing a budget, designing marketing tools, and evaluating the program both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Exercise Physiology demonstrated how the various physiological functions of the body respond to exercise. This includes adaptations that the body uses, the functioning of different systems during different types of exercise, energy use during exercise and when/how to refuel and replenish, as well as a slight look into exercise testing and program design. This course helped me understand the connection of nutrition and exercise science on a deeper level than just that food is used as energy. It helped me understand the various macronutrients and when each is used during exercise. What levels of exercise burn the most fat or what intensity burns through carbohydrate stores the fastest.
Survey of Organic and Biochem has been one of my favorite classes that I have taken. It covered the basics of Organic Chemistry; teaching me the basic structure of different compounds such as alcohols, lipids, sugars, etc. Then, it built off that information and introduced Biochemistry (mainly carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins) and how the two are interconnected. This class tied together what I had learned in Exercise Physiology and gave me a clear picture of how each macronutrient worked within the body.
Studied the various systems of the body and each of their functions. This course helped me understand how each system works together, but also helped me connect how nutrition can influence each system individually. Also, it helped me realize just how big of an impact nutrition has on each system collectively with others. This class helped me develop a good sense of reasoning when looking at various nutrition-related disease states and complications that I have since used in some other nutrition courses.
Will Take Course Spring of 2021
Expanded on the basics of chemistry, as well as introduced me to new material such as electrical systems, polarity, and how to calculate various changes within a system. This course also allowed me to conduct research by producing bioplastic and then testing its effectiveness in the hopes it may be used in exchange of current plastics and promote a more sustainable option.
