I am originally from Brooten, MN - an extremely small town in Central Minnesota near Alexandria, MN. I have 2 Brothers (one of whom is my twin), as well as two older half-siblings - a brother and sister. My parents have always been supportive of me in everything I do. From school to extracurriculars to work, they continually help me and are always there if needed.
Food and family has always played a huge part in my life. I come from a very large family so any gatherings we have are always pot-luck style, and I always remember the conversations I have with family members around the table. I have also always loved cooking with my family at any time. My dad is a master on the grill, and my mom can make just about anything. Helping in the kitchen was always time well spent with my parents after a long day at school. It was a space where I could relax and have fun with my family; not to mention I got to learn some cooking skills too.
Living in a small community taught me the value of helping others. That, when push comes to shove, being able to come together and make a difference in someone's life can have a tremendous impact. That mentality has since stuck with me through college, and has shaped my career choice along the way.
By pursuing Nutrition Education and Research I will be able to help others understand the importance of nutrition and leading a healthy life. As for research; nutrition's impact on the brain (i.e. mental health, memory disorders, etc.) has always been an extreme fascination of mine. I hope to make a difference and hopefully find new treatments to help those affected by such health concerns.
