WIDA

The state of Kentucky uses WIDA to assess students' English language ability and progress.

Students who are new to the district are given a "Home Language Survey." If the survey indicates that a student's dominant language is NOT ENGLISH, he/she will complete a screening to determine his/her ability in English.

If the screener results indicate that a student is an English as a Second Language Learner, he/she will be provided with a Program Service Plan. This plan will be signed and approved by both the student's principal and parents during a meeting. It will also be used by the student's teachers in order to provide him/her with a successful learning experience in English and in academics.

During the spring, ESL students will be given the ACCESS test to determine their progress and current ability in listening, reading, writing, and speaking in English. A student must have an overall score of 4.5 to be taken out of their ESL program and plan.
