The Mathematics Team

Dr Gilbert - Head of Department

A-levels: Maths, Further Maths, History, Music and General Studies

Degree: MSci Mathematical Sciences, PhD Mathematics (Birmingham), PGCE (Oxford)

I have always enjoyed Maths and during my PhD, I spent time visiting schools and supporting undergraduates in developing their Maths skills. I decided I would apply to the PGCE in Oxford and was placed at Cooper. I’ve been here ever since!

Mrs Rawlings - Second in department

A-Levels: Maths, Psychology, Chemistry

Degree: BSc Mathematics with Statistics (Oxford Brookes University), PGCE (Insitute of Education UCL)

Favourite book: Anything Harry Potter!

Maths was always my favourite subject at school and something I always excelled in so it was an obvious choice for study at university. I had no idea I wanted to be a teacher until I accepted a place during my training year in Essex, I absolutely loved teaching from the beginning and a few years on, having taught in Oxford and now at Cooper, I’m still really enjoying it!

One of my proudest moments in life so far is completing the Mount Everest basecamp trek, I fundraiser £3000 and trekked in horrific conditions! I’m always looking for an adventure, so anything exciting - count me in!

Mr Slevin - Third in Department

Mrs McMillan - Assistant Head Teacher

A-levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and General Studies

Degree: Joint Honours Masters in Engineering and Material Science from Trinity College, Oxford

Biography: At school I loved Maths and Science so combined these two subjects in a 4 year Engineering degree at Oxford University. I was sponsored by Corus (formerly British Steel) and so, on graduating, moved to Scunthorpe to work on one of the largest steelworks in the UK. After nearly three years there, I relocated to Oxfordshire and worked for BMW Mini at the Cowley plant as a Process Area Manager in the Body in White section. However, I had always had a desire to share my knowledge and love of Maths with young people and so decided to re-train as a teacher. I was fortunate enough to do this at Cooper School through the Graduate Teacher Programme (ie I trained “on the job” rather than having to go back to college) in 2002-3 and I have never looked back! I love my job; every day is different and every day there is something new to learn.

Dr Mutemererwa

A-levels: Mathematics, Physics and Economics

Areas of interest: All areas of mathematics but am particularly interested in applied Mathematics

Favourite book: “The Log from the Sea of Cortez” by John Steinbeck

Favourite: number (s): Fascinated by irrational numbers π, e and such like.

Favourite film/TV show: Numb3rs

Biography: I was educated in Zimbabwe, Sweden and the United Kingdom. I initially trained as an economist and then worked in minerals economics and geostatistics (there is much applied mathematics in there!) I love exploring the role of mathematics in technological developments such as in F1 (as somebody called it—the poetry of matter and energy, metal and power!).

Mr Abaee

Biography: At secondary school maths was always my favourite subject. I used to teach my classmates. I went to university and studied Physics in Iran when I was 17 years old. I came to the UK in 2002 and I got my MSc in Computing from Oxford Brookes University. Then I decided to become teacher so I started my PGCE in maths in Oxford Brookes University.
