Year 5

The Mug Project

Our clay sessions have arrived! Everyone's favourite is finally here - Y5 are the last year group to work in clay this year so they have been very patient. We are designing our own mugs! This is an all new technique for the students and we have decided to putit in place because our current Y5 are so interested and so arty. Coiling up from a slab base, the students have to control the size and dimensions of their mug and it begins as a textured cup with lines all round. Once the size is established the hard work begins as then the mug needs to be smoothed out, with no traces of the coils. The rim needs to be flattened and thinned, then we can attach a handle.

The lovely patterns of Bridget Riley

We are looking at the way Bridget Riley creates her amazing pieces of art and trying a few techniques to make our own. We don't think Bridget uses masking tape but we are heavily relying on it for ours! Thin layers of acrylic and intense pull and drag skills for even lines and shapes is key!

Our new Challenge - Sculpture

In Y5 we are working on construction and joining techniques. We are using leftover Polystyrene sheets from another project to create a cactus.  The challenge : it cannot wobble, it must be balanced AND it must be 30cm or more tall. The techniques were tough at first but we loved exploring and planning. They are finally getting to the stage when we can paint them!

Our Yayoi Kusama Installation is up!

Our Yayoi Kusama Installation is nearly ready!

See Y5 working away on this huge piece. We have created our own printing stamps for these circles and are making patterns based on Kusama's work...

Yayoi Kusama Installation for Kellett School

Inspired and excited about all our learning last week at M+, where we visited the Yayoi Kusama exhibition, Y5 have planned and started on our own installation for school. The skills we are practicing are the ones we will need for lino cutting later on - we are doing the first stage which is working with rubber to create stamps. Since Kusama's most famous motif is the dot, we are al learning to create dot circle stamps in different sizes. BUT ! What will we use them on?! Look at the photos and see what you think!

Yayoi Kusama at M+

Huge excitement for Y5 this week as we took a whole morning to go to the fabulous M+ museum in West Kowloon. We were there to explore the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's incredible large-scale installations - of which there are many! We sketched and explored, wee enjoyed galleries, infinity rooms and beautiful views where the art work complemented the gorgeos architecture. We will take our learning back to the studio and create our own installation. Watch this space!

Finished Portraits Ready for the Gallery!

More portraits were finished this week by some of our talented Y5s. We are thrilled with their learning - blocking the simple sketch, painting an underlayer of colour, then layering textures with lots of new techniques. Absolutely wonderful work!

A little splashy bunny for CNY

For those of us who've finished our animal portraits we are trying something a little different for CNY. These little rabbits are based on the art of Catherine Rayner.

Progress on Portraits

Our animals are really taking shape. Our base colours have beeen blocked and we are learning different techniques to blend layers over and create texture with our acrylic paint.

Animal Portraits

Folowing our lessons with our artist in residence, Elena Klimova, we are now working on a different kind of portrait.  We've chosen endangered wild animals and are learning the layering skills of working in acrylic paint to bring them to life. A quick line sketch blocks in the basics and then we use thinned acrylic to create a base colour to work over, through which we can still see our line drawing.

Next we begin to layer over the top. The texture is essential and we are using thicker layers of detail to create fur, shiny scales and feathers.

Our amazing Christmas Cards

Look what we made! Our cards are now being sold in the shop and at our event leading up to Christmas. We all created a window and behind you can see our little watercolours of our favourite Christmas things. Support Kellett Cares and send them for Christmas!

Our Secret Christmas Project

Every year the Year 5s at Kellett are lucky enough to take part in a huge charity project in which we create and sell our own Christmas cards. This time we made life a little extra-complicated by making advent calendar cards! We have been carefully painting teeny pictures for inside the doors and also little windows which will be able to be opened. We are currently having the design work finished and approved before we sent to print and are hoping they will be available to buy in a couple of weeks! Here is a cheeky peek of us working on our watercolours.

Working with our Artist in Residence

Our art term started with a bang this year as we have had an incredible artist in working with us at Kellett KLB. We have Eleanor McColl helping us to create a huge mural which will form the new-look entrance to the Prep school. Using our drawings we are making beautiful large wooden pieces and painting them in acrylic.

Our Art Installation

Our Year 5's started the year with a huge project - physically huge! We drew and patterned these gorgeous bugs, exploring use of line, and then copied and cut them out to create banners taller than we are! Our atrium is now full of colour and our art work looks incredible.
