Working with Artists

Eleanor McColl's Residency all through Kellett

Eleanor's residency may be over but the Comms team have made this fabulous video of her time with us, in all three schools. Take a look!

Elena Klimova

Elena Klimova is a Russian artist based in Hong Kong. Working with different materials and techniques, Elena strives to find and depict the beauty of everyday life. Moving to Hong Kong

in 2011 had a significant impact on her art. Ever since she first relocated to the city, she has been studying local culture and traditions through drawing and painting different subjects

connected with Hong Kong.

In Kellett Elena will be working closely with our older children on portraits and then sketching around school, where our younger students will watch her work in progress. She is painting a large oil commission to celebrate the anniversary of our campus and we will share her work here to keep you updated!

Working with Elena on portraits has been so inspiring. The older students were able to watch her demonstrate her incredible drawing skills on our own students. She did real time portraits and then they had 10 minutes modelling or posing to try out her techniques friends. Everyone was able to switch. This leads us nicely into our "drawing for form" unit with Y3 where we learn to look for and represent light and shadow. Our Y5's are using it to inform their close-up animal portraits. Y6 do their graduation portraits later in the year. Take a look at some of our work in progress!

Eleanor McColl

Eleanor McColl is a multi-disciplinary artist, based in Hong Kong. She studied Fine Art at U.W.E Bristol, in England and came to Hong Kong in 1999 to pursue her career as an artist and art educator. McColl's work is rooted in place with a focus on the urban environment. Her work draws the eye to the often unnoticed details of the city. Her bright and engaging paintings are the focus of our project but she works in many disciplines including photography. Click below to see her full bio and range of work!

Eleanor will be working with our students on designing pieces which reflect their iconic images of Hong Kong. Simplifying, stylising and working with bold colour, our Kellett students will be contributing to an enormous mural created with ideas from us all.

Our work is Finished!

We have had a final day with Eleanor McColl. We will miss her vibrance and excitement so much! She has been the best way for us to start our year, with colour and creativity. It's made everyone part of something as a huge arty team and it's been lovely to have the atrium full of life and colour.

We put together our piece on the floor to see what it will look like. We aren't putting it up for a while because Eleanor's project is being taken to the other schools first, so it's fantastic to see the whole thing coming together.

Work in progress...

You can see real progress being made on our beautiful wooden mural. The classes are now in a rhythm of working between the art studio on their own piece and helping in the atrium where we are making our collective piece to be put up later in the year.

Eleanor started work with our students this week and the excitement is palpable! She led her introduction in the whole school assembly on Monday and then went straight into lessons. We are learning to reduce complicated Hong Kong icons to simple line drawings. Working with a limited colour palette we are creating arresting visual collages which show all the best parts of our wonderful city, in the style of a wonderful artist.
