BOYS' BASKETBALL
Story by: Michael Brown
The boys team is 10-6 and will go into districts likely to be seeded number 1 in our district as we play a very competitive schedule and actually play a large portion of our schedule against larger schools that are a class or two higher. The seeding meeting will be held on 2/13/21. CPA will likely host districts for the first time in CPA history as we typically do not have a big enough fan capacity, however with COVID spectator limitations in place we are eligible to host this year should we be seeded first as predicted.
Most games will be live streamed this season. Please visit https://cpa.confluenceacademy.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=343501&type=d&pREC_ID=750660 for the most up to date schedule.
Let's Go Titans!
Girls' Basketball
Story by: Marsheka Hall
Choosing to play a sport during a pandemic is a true sign of dedication. Coach Dee says, “Covid changed the way we practiced and played, but it was fun and I look forward to the team working hard and getting better.” To comply with COVID-19 protocols, the players are required to wear masks during practice and games.
VOLLEYBALL SEASON STARTS
Story by: Jada Edwards
Although volleyball is currently in the off-season because of the COVID pandemic, the volleyball team will participate in the alternative spring season from February 22, 2021, through April 30, 2021. Not all schools choose this route, however, CPA did because they wanted to make sure all athletes and coaches remained safe. The team will practice in the Titan Gym at CPA when they start practicing. During these practices, masks are required and a covid test is also required every two weeks. It is likely that volleyball games will be live-streamed because fans may not be able to attend because of COVID. The team has 10 returning players, and there are 30 new girls interested in playing. The team will be accepting anyone new until the end of tryouts which will be the middle of February. Girls who are interested should reach out to Coach Brittney Ray. While it won't be this year, Coach Ray is planning a trip to Florida next September for a volleyball tournament. Coach Ray says, “This season is likely to be very different from the others. COVID tests are mandated for every in-season sport for the duration of the competitive season. CPA volleyball players did have to be quarantined due to exposure to another team that tested positive. CPA is closely communicating with the local health department to stay up to date on the best practices for keeping our student-athletes safe and healthy.”
THE FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES (FCA)
Story by: RaShayun Washington
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging athletes and coaches on the high school, college, and even professional level to use the impactful platform of sport to reach everyone in their communities with the transforming power of Jesus Christ. After joining FCA, students can participate in camps, weekly meetings, and other special events that are coming up in the year of 2021. Students gain discipline, as well as confidence in achieving their goals. FCA equips and empowers coaches and athletes to unite, inspire, and change the world through the gospel. FCA welcomes all students, even those who do not participate in athletics. In order for FCA to function as an in-school or after-school club, it needs one or two student leaders to be trained
Because it is a faith based organization there has to be a student leader who facilitates the meetings with the sponsor present as a supervisor and support. The activities are planned by the students and can include movie nights and camp opportunities when we are not navigating a pandemic. Student athletes can grow in their Christian faith and how it applies to everyday life as a part of FCA. The purpose is for Christian athletes to have a place to have fellowship and grow in their character and faith. COVID has made it challenging to find a new leadership as our former leader Jerimiah Walker graduated last spring.
