THE VIRTUAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT CHALLENGE
Story by: Makeda Brown
Mrs. Luker has been the sponsor of student government for 10 years! The total number of students in the school is about 400 in any given year and Mrs. Luker says that about a dozen are involved, ¨Between 14-15 depending on the year, sometimes the numbers are really high and other times on the lower end. This year we have 17 members, but I think when we are back in person that number will go up. Everyone loves to help with the basketball games and dances.” Every year, the student government decorates the school for the holidays, “Student government raises money through the school store, some money is used to buy decorations.” Normally, Mrs. Luker and student government members decorate. However, this year because we’re virtual, the students couldn’t get to the school or didn’t want to risk COVID exposure or they had to work, and some may have just forgotten, so Mrs. Luker decorated the building alone, ¨I know when I decorate my house it makes me happy to come home, so I hope when students and staff come to work it brings them a little bit of happiness too. Plus, it shows that someone cares about the school’s environment. It is always nice to see something new.¨ Mrs. Luker adds, “This year has been like no other and yet we were able to hold a fun spirit week and a blood drive that saved people's lives.” Student government also planned a super cool outdoor movie night, but that was canceled by the St. Louis Department of Health due to health concerns. Mrs. Luker hopes to be able to make that movie night happen this spring and a few other virtual and/or in-person events.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Story by: Elijah Johnson
The mission of the National Honor Society (NHS), is to take the academically excellent leaders of the student body and help them strengthen their leadership skills. To become a member of Confluence Preparatory Academy’s Chapter of National Honor Society, a student must have a GPA of at least 3.5 or above, 90% attendance, and have very few behavior infractions. If you have those requirements and want to participate you have to talk with your council if this is something you would like to be a part of.
