2ND SEMESTER: IN-PERSON OR VIRTUAL?
STORY BY: Tamijah Mitchell
Confluence Preparatory is open for in-person students second semester, which starts January 19, 2021. In December, Confluence sent out communication to all families asking them to choose in-person or virtual. Because the virus is still a threat, some families have elected to stay safe at home and continue with virtual learning. About 25% selected in-person. Guidance counselor, Mr. Cook was hopeful more would return to school, “In-school would have a very positive impact on everyone because of how hard it is to get in contact with the teachers or counselors virtually.” Coach Karvinen agrees, “I think in-school is going to be way better. This school year was really rough on the students and teachers.” Most students, like junior Nahyra Grisby, agree, “I kind of liked virtual because I can be in class lying down but I also miss a lot of my friends and teachers.” There were families who did not respond to the survey and they have been assigned to in-person learning, so CPA expects that about 50% of their student population will return to school. To accommodate everyone, all the classes are still being set up as if everyone was still virtual and CPA is staying on block schedule. Many students like sophomore student Darrell Mitchell don’t think the block schedule is best, “The school year would have been better if we had all 8 classes every day.” And while the block schedule is here to stay for 2nd semester, school start time returns to normal and the 1st hour begins at 7:45am.
