Reading Software (Natural Reader)
Natural Reader is available for students who have Speech-to-Text as an accommodation to use during exams. If you've not used this program before, you may want to practice using it before exams. You can download a free version of Natural Reader for Windows or Mac OS from the official website.
Opening the Exam Document
If Speech-to-Text is one of your accommodations, you will receive a USB thumb drive with any exam (excluding exams in a language other than English) that you write with LAS. To get started:
Open Natural Reader either by double clicking the shortcut on the desktop or by pressing the windows key, typing "Natural Reader", and pressing enter.
Plug the USB drive into the computer (located behind the monitors in G307). Find the PDF copy of your exam either by clicking on "Open folder to view files" from the Autoplay dialog box or by pressing the windows key, typing "File Explorer", pressing enter, and clicking on the USB drive on the left side of the file explorer window.
Drag the PDF you would like to hear read from the file explorer window to the Natural Reader window.
Click the play button to begin narration.
Improve your experience using Natural Reader
You may find that you would only like to hear certain sections of the exam read instead of hearing the exam in its entirety. Here are a few ways to streamline what you hear:
Select which sentence you would like read by clicking on it.
While the document is being read, you can pause and move back and forward by using the navigation buttons near the top of the window [picture] or by using the keyboard:
Play/Pause: Ctrl + Shift + R
Previous Sentence: Ctrl + Shift + Up
Next Sentence: Ctrl + Shift + Down
If the document includes a header and/or footer, you can adjust the reading area of the document to exclude them.
