This is an iconic 23-mile hiking route, crossing the highest ridge in the Northeast. The route follows the Appalachian Trail almost entirely above treeline, and, therefore, gives hikers access to 13 miles of arctic/alpine tundra (one New England’s rarest ecosystems).
To help ensure group safety and mobility (and in keeping with group use regulations on the Appalachian Trail), we will take a maximum of 16 students, and four adults.
Note that this is a strenuous hike. Good fitness is required, and a willingness to suffer a little bit, are required.
Trip Leaders:

Bob Wilder (Social Studies)
Johanna Glazer (Social Studies)
Will Kemeza (English, Rivers & Revolutions)
While many hikers attempt to complete the route in less time, we will hike for four days, staying in AMC huts (Mizpah, Madison, and Lakes of the Clouds) along the way, thereby ensuring warm, dry nights and delicious meals. Most of the trip’s estimated cost of $550 is associated with lodging and meals.
The required gear list is here.
