Making the Best Out of The Season
By Hayley Villani
Throughout the fall sports season, the Boys' Volleyball Team played many games and had many great experiences. All the way from August until early November, the team worked hard and worked together to make the best out of their season. They faced some challenges, but they pushed past them and had so much fun when things went their way.
While the Boys' Volleyball Team may not have ended with the best record, they still had a great season because of their optimism, effort, and teamwork.
This year was Mr. Valerio’s second season as the Head Coach of the Boys' Varsity Volleyball Team. He mentioned how exciting it is to work with the students.
“They bring a fun energy and insane athleticism each and every day to practices or games and work extremely hard to get better,” said Mr. Valerio. He also noted that the team greatly improved over the course of the season, winning two games against Sayville and Shoreham-WR.
Even though the team often got off to a slow start in sets, “there were a ton of really close and contested games this season against teams who would usually blow us out,” said Mr. Valerio. He also said that while a big challenge for the team was staying positive through losses, “the boys held strong together through it all and I am proud of their resiliency.”
Two seniors on the team are Jack Montoya and Jake Gulyansky. When asked what their experiences were like this year, they both had similar responses. “It was really fun, I liked working with Valerio as a coach,” said Jake. “We had a lot of fun, but we did not win many games,” agreed Jack.

Jack also noted that, since most athletes on the team only play volleyball this time of year, it became challenging to get back into things and work together as a team.
Jake discussed how it was a challenge to win games and said, “It was hard to win the two games that we did, but when we did it was a good feeling.”
They both talked about how the team got better at working together over time, and Jake even said that he personally made some improvements in his serve, passing, and working with his teammates.
Overall, the Boys' Volleyball team made the best out of their season. It was a challenge, but they had fun working together. While they only won two games, they still made a great number of accomplishments.
As Mr. Valerio said, the Boys' Volleyball Team was “competitive in every set and never truly out of a game.”

As far as school sports teams go, Golf isn't one of the top choices that come to mind. Only a few know that we even have a Golf team here at Comsewogue high school. However, despite students' knowledge of this. Comsewogue's golf team gained recognition elsewhere.
The Comsewogue's golf team was first established in 2002. Coached by Brett Thompson, he provides insight into the golf team.
Ten to twelve years ago, many schools went on austerity when the economy suffered. Abstinence is when a government implements strict economic policies to reduce government spending and public debt. And in this case, it was school programs.
Miller Place was one of those programs; Golf is one of them. Our Golf program remained, and as the years went on. Finding people to play to put a strong team together was getting more complex.
Thompson states," I had a thought, and I asked DeVincenzo to combine with Miller Place. They don't have a Golf program, and we could use more players to strengthen the team. So that's how that all came about, and we have been combined with them for about 4 to 5 years now."
The golf team's small numbers have connected with Miller place to craft the winning team. So much so that as of this year, they won the Suffolk county team championship between Comsewogue and Westhampton at Spring Lake Golf Club on November 7, 2022,
and are going to be competing in the Long Island Championship against Nassau county's team tournament winner.
It will take place at Bethpage Black, where they had the U.S. Open several times. Golf is one of the few sports you can do well into your golden years.
As stated by Brett Thompson, "it's something you can play as a 50, 60, or 70-year-old. Whereas you can't play football when you pass 20 years old, you can't play lacrosse; you can't play soccer. It becomes a lot more physically demanding," and this is true and becomes disappointing when you can no longer precipitate in a sport you enjoyed so much.
Golf is utilized in more ways than just a sport. For instance, many business deals on the golf course are used as a form of social opportunity to enhance interaction between different generations. They have been proven to provide opportunities to strengthen social connections, such as through business deals and group building.
The golf team meets four days a week. Golf is considered a fall sport and begins two weeks before the school year; nonetheless, it continues through to spring.
Comsewogue is very fortunate to have a very accommodating collaboration with Pine Ridge. Being a part of the Golf team not only gives you the perk of playing Golf every day for free but to continue the accomplishments made this year to the next.
As the golf team progresses and their Nassau team tournament, there is much to look forward to. An individual golfer won a match as an individual, and they will be playing in Elmira in June.
As well as an orientation event that will encompass teaching and practicing proper swing mechanics organized by coach Thompson; Though it is still in the works, this event will create a great opportunity and avenue to acquire more interest in entering the Comsewogue golf team.
Because after this year,
it'll be a whole new team, and we look forward to seeing how students at Comsewogue will continue its legacy as the new year progresses.

The Race is on

Comsewogue High School’s Boys Cross Country team had a very memorable year. Their three seniors: Christian Scholl, Michael Lettich, and Nick Trubia, each broke personal records. This was actually Michael’s first year of Cross Country, so for him to do so well, he deserves several rounds of applause.
While only winning one meet this year, it was still an accomplishment. One is better than none, right? Mr. Posnanski, the coach, trained them tirelessly. The players have practice multiple times a week, which gets them into great shape.
Senior Christian Scholl has had a good few years with Cross Country. He broke school records and worked very hard to be the best runner he could be and the best student he could be. When interviewed, Michael had nothing but praises to sing about his teammate, stating that “Christians great, he’s one of the fastest kids on Long Island.” Well, would you look at that? One of the fastest kids on Long Island goes to our high school!
The team will definitely be sad to lose their star seniors this year. Though all hope isn’t lost as the team will be left in good hands with the remaining teammates, who will dearly miss their seniors. They will shine through, showing their personal achievements that strengthen the team as a whole
The boys did the best they could this year. It definitely isn’t easy to win these meets, as there are other talented runners from other schools, but Comsewogue will always persevere and hold its own!
