Há um receio em todo estudante de Ciência da Computação, no momento que começa o curso: a exigência do inglês como precondição para a leitura dos textos técnicos exigidos nas disciplinas. Até que, nos primeiros períodos, é possível retardar esta necessidade, através da procura de textos básicos similares em português – ainda que a qualidade das traduções seja duvidosa –, mas depois de algum tempo as opções escasseiam, e não há muito o que fazer. Esse é um obstáculo que tem sido ultrapassado pela grande maioria, mesmo que não se adquira uma habilidade maior na língua inglesa; em geral a leitura pode ser contextual, sem que seja exigido o entendimento completo das expressões e palavras mais difíceis.
Já na hora de escrever em inglês, os estudantes têm que lidar com o terror de elaborar raciocínios completos na língua, nos quais a sintaxe não é a única preocupação; o leitor daquele texto precisa compreender as ideias, em um estilo que lhe seja familiar, utilizando expressões que, com simplicidade, consigam emitir a mensagem desejada.
Por mais que isso seja um problema, saber se expressar em texto na língua inglesa é inevitável para uma vida profissional ativa em computação, pois:
Aplicativos de tradução automática evoluem a cada dia, por isso não deixa de ser sensato pensar que eles resolverão nossos problemas de tradução em um futuro distante.
Ainda assim, eles estão longe de trazer resultados melhores do que pode ser feito através da interação humana. Isso, no entanto, não impede que esta ferramenta seja útil; ela pode adiantar o nosso trabalho, diminuindo o esforço de composição do texto.

This is an obstacle that has been often overcome, even if a greater ability in the English language is not achieved; in general the reading can be contextual, without requiring the complete understanding of the most difficult words and expressions.
However, when english writing abilities are required, students must deal with the terror of elaborating thorough reasoning in texts, in which the syntax is hardly the only concern; the reader of that text needs to understand the ideas, in a familiar style, using expressions that can deliver the desired message in a simple form.
As much as this is a problem, knowing how to express yourself in English is inevitable for a professional life in computing, because:
1. Evite começar com "It is"
“É importante…”, “Também é muito comum…”, “Há pouca atenção…” não podem ser “It is important…”, “Also, it is very common…”, “There is little attention…”
2. Aprenda a usar o artigo definido "the"
“As células foram plaqueadas…” em inglês seria? “The cells were plated…”
Para escrita mais formal, tirar o "the" deixa mais profissional. "Cells were plated…”
3. Apenas inicie com letra maiúscula se a palavra se refere a um local/departamento/título.
4. Esqueça o "that"
“Os resultados mostraram que muitas pessoas gostam de frutas.” Se traduzir diretamente, parece melhor: “The results showed that many people like fruits.”
Mas remover a partícula deixa o texto melhor, inclusive para leitura: “The results showed many people like fruits.”
5. Tente colocar adjetivos, incluindo os possessivos, antes dos substantivos, quando possível (removendo o plural do adjetivo)
“Caraterísticas do programa” é “Program characteristics”
“Prontuário do paciente” é “Patient chart”
“Prontuários dos pacientes” é “Patient charts” or “Patients' charts”
6. No português, assumimos um sujeito e não repetimos. Em inglês, é preciso repetir um pouco mais.
“Neste estudo, 74 pacientes foram incluídos. Destes, 7 (9.5%) foram do sexo masculino.”
tradução direta: “In this study, 74 patients were included. Of these, 7 (9.5%) were male.”
melhor se “In this study, 74 patients were included. Of these, 7 (9.5%) patients were male.”
7. Frases preposicionais, transições e advérbios devem ser sempre seguidos por vírgula
“Neste estudo encontramos este resultado.” torna-se “In this study, this result was found.”
Embora o desenvolvimento de software esteja imune a quase todas as leis da física, a entropia nos afeta muito. Entropia é um termo da física que se refere ao nível de “desordem” em um sistema. Infelizmente, as leis da termodinâmica garantem que a entropia no universo tende em direção ao máximo. Quando a desordem aumenta no software, os programadores chamam isso de “deterioração de software”.
Há muitos fatores que podem contribuir para a deterioração de software. O mais importante parece ser a psicologia, ou cultura, em ação em um projeto. Mesmo se você for uma equipe de uma pessoa, a psicologia que envolve seu projeto pode ser algo muito delicado. Mesmo se um projeto tiver grandes planos elaborados e as melhores pessoas, ele ainda pode vivenciar a ruína e a decadência durante seu tempo de vida. No entanto, há outros projetos que, apesar das enormes dificuldades e constantes retrocessos, combatem com sucesso a tendência natural em direção à desordem e conseguem se sair muito bem.
Não tentar traduzir as frases como vêm direto do original, vamos aproveitar este método para fazer diferente.
Traduzindo um texto, de forma direta: pensar no que está sendo dito, e criar uma frase em inglês independente.
É positivo tentar usar o mesmo método que esboçamos antes, em que escrevemos várias frases simples sem conexão, para posteriormente ligar através de conectivos, substituir palavras e expressões e modificar a ordem padrão dos termos.
