"Pieve Vecchia" by Luca Baldan (3^C)
The church of S. Maria in Valtenesi, nowadays known as “Pieve Vecchia”, is located in the area of Manerba named Pieve.
The church has an ancient history, it lies on ancient Roman remains and it dates back to the paleochristian age.
Its name is related to the role that it has had in the past: Pieve, or "Mother Church" of all the chapels and churches of Valtenesi.
Valtenesi is a Celtic word that we can find in the names of some villages in the area.
The church is dedicated to S. Maria around the 5th-6th century as recalled in the "legend of Ermoaldo".
