Sample laboratory report

Title of Laboratory (Heading level 1)

Introduction (Heading level two H2)

[Written using a past tense prose structure]

Tells the reader the purpose and intent of the laboratory, the system being investigated, defines terms, names partners.

Data table (H2)

Table caption

V₁ is the volume in quarts
p₁ is the price in dollars

Data graph (H2)

Data graph with labelled axes

Data Analysis (H2)

For laboratories that use Desmos to analyze the data, this section is just a screenshot of the Desmos analysis. In the discussion below explain to the reader the meaning of the analysis.

Discussion and Conclusions (H2)

A discussion of the results of the experiment that answers the questions posed in the introduction. Thoughtfully put together, well reasoned, logical, sensible. Complete and thorough explanation of the science and the results found including an error analysis if appropriate.

Explain to the reader the meaning of the data analysis. The analysis may be a slope of a line or a constant that was being measured. Report the slope or constant along with the units. For the above lab the slope was 2.70 dollars per quart. Include the units when citing a slope or other parameter value. Explain the meaning of the value you reported. Tell the reader what you said you would tell them in the introduction. Note that the R² is a statistical measure and is not a part of the scope of this course. For the purposes of this class, always ignore the R². The experimental result will always be a parameter, not a statistic.
