Welcome to our School Counseling website!! We know there are many barriers that can be happening right now in your lives and our goal is to help break as many of them as we can: College/Career, Social & Emotional and Academic needs. Let's get through this together :)
School Counselor vs Guidance Counselor:
"as we highlight the school counseling profession, you may find yourself explaining why we don’t use the term 'guidance counselor.' The answer is simple: your title shapes how your work is understood. ASCA moved away from 'guidance counselor' in 1990 because it no longer reflected the comprehensive, data‑informed responsibilities of school counselors. The older term described a much narrower, vocationally focused role that doesn’t match the scope of school counselors' training or impact.
Research reinforces why the change matters. Research studies showed that participants who saw the term 'guidance counselor' rated professionals as significantly less competent across key school counseling tasks compared to those who saw 'school counselor.'
That single word change affected perceptions of your expertise and the public’s understanding of what you do. Put simply: the title 'school counselor' protects the integrity of the profession and the visibility of your full role. Using it consistently strengthens how others see your work and how they support it. This week and every week, let’s claim the title with confidence: school counselor."
