The Columbus County Schools Board of Education supports a rigorous academic standard for student graduation. All students who successfully complete all of the graduation requirements detailed on this page shall be awarded a high school diploma. There are three (3) diploma requirements that students must meet in order to earn a high school diploma. Planning to meet these requirements should begin well before the ninth grade, when students are in middle school. Ideally, students and their parents should work with teachers and school counselors to make the best choices for the individual student.
As students plan their course of study, please remember:
All students must meet North Carolina exit standards and testing requirements, in addition to course requirements in order to be eligible for a high school diploma.
It is the student’s responsibility to make certain that he/she is enrolled in the courses that meet the requirements of his/her course of study, as well as those of the chosen college or career.
School Counselors are available at each high school to advise and assist students and parents.
Parents/Guardians may request a copy of the student’s transcript from the school.
Columbus County Schools will do everything possible to assist students in reaching their goal of graduating on time; however, it is the responsibility of students and parents to make sure they have the number and composition of units needed to graduate. As students register for their senior year, they should make certain they are taking enough units to graduate. If they are unsure of the number of units needed for graduation, students should contact their school counselor. This is each student’s responsibility.
Students complete 28 units of credit (or more) in grades 9-12 in preparation for high school graduation. For specific course area requirements, use the “North Carolina High School Graduation Requirements” on the following page.
Columbus County Schools may count successful completion of course work in grades 9-12 at a summer school session or course(s) taken outside Columbus County Schools toward the requirements of this rule. Summer school courses outside of the Columbus County School System must have prior approval in order to be awarded credit.
Columbus County Schools may count successful completion of course work in grades 9-12 at an off-campus institution toward course requirements. Off-campus institutions must be accredited by the State Department of Public Instruction or regional Association of Schools and Colleges.
Students are required to meet exit standards which include completing EOC assessments for Math I, Math III, Biology I, and English II. Additional information regarding EOC assessments may be found at: https://www.dpi.nc.gov/districts-schools/testing-and-school-accountability/state-tests
Students following the Occupational Course of Study are required to meet rigorous exit standards as outlined in State Board of Education policy HSP-N-004 (16 NCAC 6D.0503).
Students are required to successfully complete instruction in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in order to meet Healthful Living Essential Standards as a requirement for high school graduation. *CPR acquired in middle school may be substituted.
