Our goals as a working group center around three major topics:
Advanced understanding of low-cost and open-source technologies that can be utilized in community-based/citizen science research approaches.
Identification of environmental data requirements for infrastructure development (e.g. relocation/managed retreat from erosion and storm recovery) and appropriate data collection methods.
Support development of skills required for researchers applying community-based monitoring/observing approaches in the Arctic
The AOST CWG was present at Arctic Science Summit Week 2025 in Colorado. Here we presented our research at the Navigating the New Arctic Annual Community Meeting and in the Science Summit.
The AOST CWG held a successful training workshop with the Fostering Indigenous-Led Research Convergence Working Group. During the session "Strategies Toward Indigenous-Led Research: Be a Changemaker in Arctic Research at Every Stage of Your Career" we facilitated a component focused on "Low-cost, open-source, community-based methods”. This workshop highlighted how recent advances in low-cost, open-source observing methods provide an opportunity for researchers at all stages of their academic careers – from early-career researchers and students to principal investigators (PIs) – to combine cutting-edge technologies with local observations and community priorities. As a group, we collaboratively explored barriers alongside practical solutions with participants. A report from the event will be available soon.
We Supported two Early Career Researchers to join us in Colorado in addition to supporting a Sharing Circle event in the Indigenous Pavillion. They share their experiences here!
We have recently supported three projects centered on the use of low-cost and open-source technologies in community-based research. Reports will be available soon.

The AOST was present at the Arctic Observing Summit in Edinburgh. We held a successful session on Day 1 entitled: The use of low-cost and open-source technologies in community-based monitoring approaches: emerging areas, scaling, and training requirements.
