The mission of the Diversity Committee is to create and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive community in which all faculty, staff, and students are proud to be members. The Committee seeks to open dialogues and address issues of equity, diversity, and department climate. The Committee promotes activities and programs that foster the success of all individuals in the department, especially those from historically excluded groups.
We support and advocate for members of historically excluded groups through community education. Specifically:
We organize departmental discussions around topics that affect the graduate students as well as the department community (called CHAT+s)
We organize departmental training events led by campus offices such as the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) and the Center for Inclusion and Social Change (CISC)
We initiate and maintain connections with campus and national organizations that focus on diversity in STEM and mathematics (e.g. Colorado Diversity Initiative and the Math Alliance)
We advocate to other departmental committees on issues that affect departmental members, especially graduate students.
Through community building events, we work to develop a supportive environment within the Department that will help all its members, but especially historically excluded individuals, to thrive in their mathematical pursuits.
