SASE National 2018 Conference was held in Chicago from Oct. 4th through Oct. 6th. Over 70+ companies attended the conference to look for full-time and internship candidates. The conference also offers professional and leadership development through workshops. Above all, by attending the conference, the CU Boulder SASE family was able to form professional connections that are crucial for career growth. Out of the 8 people that went: 6 students were able to land interviews, 3 were offered positions, and all were able to attend for free.
Aside from networking, the group was able to tour downtown Chicago. Sites visited include: Navy Piers, Magnificent Mile, and Millenium Park. The group also got a chance to settle the age old debate of NY-style vs Chicago Deepdish Pizza. Although the debate is still at large, one thing that's irrefutable is that the trip ended too soon.
Various workshops were held on topics ranging from Lean Six Sigma to Applying our Diverse Background to Create a Bright Future. Overall we learn plenty from the industry professionals leading these workshops. In extent, there were multiple hospitality suites which allows us to network with professionals on a more personal level. There is also a career fair, which we were able to shoot our shot.
Some context: We have almost achieved a perfect gender distribution for this trip! As we realize that engineering is still a heavily male dominated field, we hope that these numbers will improve in the future. In addition, we are working in close partnership with SWE to further boost interest in our National Conference. Although the major distribution is still heavily favouring Computer Science, but as our SASE chapter gets bigger, we will have a wider diversity of majors.
More Context: The students who received interviews are the ones who applied early! Be sure to keep your eyes on the SASE website for the 2019 SASE National Conference Registration. Usually they open around June/July. Those who are offered job positions are the 2 Aerospace Engineering students that we brought as well as 1 of the computer science student. However, there are plenty of opportunities for other majors!
