How To: Use a Job Search Website
A job search can be stressful and overwhelming. However, the rapidly changing work environment may also bring about new opportunities. To maximize your chance of being hired through job search engines, follow these tips:
Use a variety of job search sites: make a free account on Indeed, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and your school’s career network.
Create an account that allows you to save jobs you want to apply to later. These jobs will appear on your My Jobs page so you can return to them when you’re ready to apply. Once you’ve applied, you’ll be able to track your status from the same page. It’s the easiest way to keep track of all the opportunities that catch your eye.Â
Upload your resume.Â
When you create your profile on the job site, you’ll have the option to upload your resume. Doing so will give you the ability to easily apply for jobs AND give hiring managers the ability to search for you based on your resume. They can then send you open positions. *Think about removing your specific address from your resume.
Â
Browse positions by location in the search bar.
You can search broadly in a city or narrow your search to a specific zip code. From there, you can use filters or add job titles as you find postings that sound interesting to you.
Filter results based on your requirements.
If you know the exact qualifiers you are looking for in a job, you can use the site’s filtering by entering the job title or keywords, location, job type, date the job was posted, and so on.
Set up job alerts to stay up to date.
Job alerts are email updates about new jobs that fit the criteria you’re interested in. It’s a convenient way to see new job postings as soon as employers post them.
You can create multiple job alerts to be sent to you either daily or weekly. From your account, you can manage alerts by setting how often you’d like to receive email updates and pausing or deleting alerts.
Continue searching: not just once, not twice, but several times. Refine your search to find the jobs that are the closest match to your qualifications and interest. You may also need to try several different combinations of search terms for different job types, industries and/or geographies you are considering.
