Tennis records one of its most successful seasons
by Kennedy McCarty
The Lady Eagles tennis season has come to a successful close. Hayden Bellamy, a junior, placed 5th overall at State. After receiving a bye, she defeated Richardson of Augusta in straight sets before falling to Frieze of Chapman 6-2, 7-6. From there she rebounded to dominate Jackson from Pratt 9-1 and Morris from Independence 9-3. In the 5th place match she fought off Frederick from Buhler 9-6.
Samantha Diedrich, a senior and Lexie Schroeder a junior, defeated the team of Aguilar/Smith in their first match, but fell Babcock/Nichol of Buhler in the second match. They defeated Lazarczyk/Winklhofer of Bishop Miege, but were eliminated by Soto/Thornton of Circle High School to end their season.
Colby took their top eight with them for them to experience state and look at the competition taste wide.
To celebrate their successes, the Lady Eagles had an end of the season party with everyone. They played games and then went and watched a long meaningful video about the season, and played and talked about all of the girls’ favorite memories from that year.
Everyone got to sign the tennis ball presented to the seniors and then all the underclassmen got a ball with a saying on it with their name.
This season was one of the strongest and best seasons Colby has had in a long time judging by the records. Coach Weishaar stated that she thinks this is the best group of girls she's had in all nine years of her coaching career.
We will all have to wait until next season to see what kind of talent the Lady Eagles tennis team will have.

Notes from the GWAC
By Tyler Rehmer
Athletic director, Travis Betz, attended the monthly GWAC league meeting in Scott City. Their main points of discussion were how the GWAC league tournaments went for girls’ golf and girls’ tennis went, and how the middle school GWAC volleyball went.
They previewed the GWAC middle school/high school cross country meet, and the GWAC high school volleyball tournament. All of the league schools felt the need to look ahead and discuss the number of girls for each GWAC middle school girls basketball team for their upcoming season. That is so they could make scheduling adjustments if needed.
Within the meeting they also discussed an activity that is continuing to grow and that is middle school girls wrestling. They projected the numbers of girls and they discussed a schedule for this upcoming season. The final thing they discussed in the meeting was how the GWAC league wanted to vote on several items in the upcoming KSHSAA area meeting.
The cross country season finishes with league and regionals

The Colby High School cross country team competed in the GWAC meet at Hugoton. The team did well and some of the team members managed to set their own personal records at that meet. Understandably, the coaches were proud of their team's performance in this race. The boys team placed 4th as a team overall.
Sophomore Haydin Litsinberger and freshman Derek Barraza both finished in the nineteens finishing 19:34 and 19:51 respectively. Sophomore Dalton Bell finished as the team’s 3rd runner with a time of 20:19. The next two runners both completed the race with times in the twenty-one minute window. Sophomore Grant Stephens ran a 21:29 and junior Wyatt Davenport ran a 21:37. Sophomore Caden Schriner finished the race with a 23:35.
The lone girls runner was sophomore Emilie Stramel and she ran a 24:17 on the day.
This year’s regional meet was held at a familiar course for the Eagle cross country runners. The team ran at Goodland on October 22nd in order to qualify for the State meet. Stramel finished with a 25:34, good for 33rd overall. Litsinberger once again paced the boys with a time of 20:05, good for 31st. Davenport and Bell finished about two minutes behind him and placed 56th and 57th, respectively. Stephens finished the day with a 23:16 rounding out the team and the 2022 cross country season.

The boys varsity team went head to head against Lakin on October 14th. The game was a great one for the players, fans, and community. The Eagles played very well on both sides of the ball and only had 10 yards in penalties for the game compared to 51 by Lakin. Defensively, they held Lakin to only 20 points. Lakin is a pretty good offensive team who had averaged 36.4 points in their wins.
The game was tied at 14 at halftime with Colby scoring eight in the 3rd period, which ended up being enough. Laking tacked on six in the 4th quarter, but it was not enough. Colby’s defense held on for one of the most significant stops of the season on a two point conversion in the 4th quarter. That ended up helping them win the game.
The JV team went down to play against Lakin the following Monday. Even without their starting quarterback, the Eagles won by over 30 points, a great way to end the season!
The varsity team faced what could have been the best team they faced all season. Scott City came in beating two of the teams Colby lost to in Hugoton and Holcomb. The Eagles were hit by the injury bug in several key positions, including quarterback. Scott City took advantage and came away with a 48-0 victory.

The college cross country team traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas for a meet on September 30th. They placed second right behind Arkansas University, the 16th ranked team in Division I. Colby’s Sanele Masondo brought home the gold with a time of 23:18. Colby had three other runners that finished in the top 30.
Next, the team had a meet at home on October 15th. The women’s team was not able to run with a full squad, however Emily Diercks won the open division with a time of 17:17. The Trojan Invite hosted almost 300 athletes and four nationally ranked men's teams, the Trojans being one of them. This brought a tremendous amount of people to the community. The ranked women's teams that competed were Garden City Community College and Trinidad State Junior College.
Colby Trojan Sanele Masondo was awarded National Athlete of the Week for a second time after his performance in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Diercks was also awarded after being the conference leader for women's cross country.
