Mary O'Neil

Mary made Lowell her home for 50 years. She made dresses and lived in the same house on Summer Street. Her sister found work in a mill. Her brother eventually bought his own house and opened his own grocery store.

Charles Antonopoulos

Charles’ little store grew into a big chain of dry-cleaning stores called “Anton’s Cleaners.” The chain is still operating today in over 40 locations throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. His three sons eventually took over the leadership of the company.

Rafal Thaher

Rafal got a job as a supervisor at a CVS drugstore and studied business at Middlesex Community College. Her brother still lives in Iraq, working with a company that protects U.S. military personnel. She wants to help him apply for a visa and bring him and his family to the United States.

Vera Tith

Vera became the first Cambodian teacher in Lowell Public Schools. She shared her Cambodian culture with her students, teaching them customs and words from the Khmer language. She has been very active within her community, attending meetings and events.

Gordon Halm

Gordon worked with groups that help immigrants get settled in Lowell, since sometimes they did not feel welcome here. He became a leader at his church and foundered the city’s African Cultural Festival and the African Community Center of Lowell. He wrote and published a children’s book called “Parsley’s Great Adventure” about his family’s chicken.

Izaias was happy to have the chance to go to college and improve his life. Living in a diverse city like Lowell gave him a better understanding of people of different cultures. He helped people learn about his culture, too!

Darmery Cano

Darmery married Elkin. They participated in a dance troupe that performs a Colombian dance called Cumbia. This music makes people want to dance and have fun. It was important for Darmery and Elkin to share their North Colombian culture with the young people.
