Life was very hard in Greece. In 1893, the country was very poor. This caused a lot of problems and there were not many job or school opportunities in the country. I decided to leave my farm in Greece because I wanted to get a better education in America.

Life in Transition
Life in Transition
I came to the United States alone. The ship I traveled on was very crowded. I chose Lowell because I had a cousin who worked in the mills. At first, I couldn’t find a job because I did not speak English. I thought I might not be able to earn money and that I would have to return to Greece. I finally found a job as a tailor, making suits and jackets. I was paid $4.00 per week for 60 hours of work.

I married my wife and we had four sons. I became very involved in the Greek Orthodox Church community. As for work, I opened my own tailor shop and clothing dry-cleaning business. My sons helped me run the business and expand it to other locations in Lowell.
