Soma means body in Greek, as a somatic counselor I bring the body into my counseling sessions. This could be anything from investigating physical sensations that are related to emotions to getting up and shaking it out. I have found, both as a client and as a therapist, that somatic therapy is incredibly effective when working with trauma and creating sustainable change. A metaphor that resonates with me is that talk therapy is like getting the top of the splinter out but somatic therapy can get the entire splinter out, even what's under the skin.
Childhood sexual abuse can impact every area of a person's life and the impact can last for much longer than the abuse occurs. I personally know what it is like to do the hard work in healing from childhood sexual abuse and I deeply desire to support others in their healing journey.
